The Scimitar 7 Nov 2018
BNSC NEWSLETTER
Tonight it is good evening from my home office….
A few delays…have meant that I need to complete my message to you a little later than envisaged…but all it does is give me a better perspective on the important issues in life…. please don’t ever take anything for granted…it could easily disappear literally in a moment…
Enough of the philosophical approach…let’s get down to the nitty-gritty at the North….
Last Friday saw a good mate of mine return to the Scimitar…Bones brought a new partner to entertain us for the evening… and although Peter was not at his best…he was as good as his guarantee that Rich was an amazing and talented musician…he played us one hit after the other in foot-stomping style that had us calling over and over for more…so Thanks Bones..you were 100% correct…”Comfortably Numb” was an amazing rendition…but you failed to tell us that he would be brilliant at a myriad of other favourites too…so thank you for a great evening…for those who weren’t there….(sorry for you!!)…this week we welcome back Freedom Unfound…who remain a popular favourite of the crowd…. come and listen to them rock the night away….
Back to Friday…and the weekly draws….this particular Members draw…made my heart stop for an instant as I realised that the number drawn was a school mate of mine…David Fosse…(who is a regular, sitting in the corner of the Scimitar, week after week)….and he only realised that I was not pulling his leg…when I asked him to please forward me his banking details on Monday morning…so our Members draw has been won at R3600 (well done David…your regular attendance has been rewarded …..this proves once again, that the more often that you are at the Cub on a Friday evening, the more you increase your chances of being a winner….
When it came to Joker draw time the excitement levels had risen (as they always do)…not yet to fever pitch…but the “hub-hub” in the bar has definitely raised the decibel level as the conclusion to the current week culminates in the pulling of the ticket from the beeeeeg black box…this week we had an odd name “Jannie Cassidy”…I was a bit concerned as I thought we had got a throw-back to the seventies and David (of the Partridge Family and a solo career fame) had a brother who actually came to our little out-post in Benoni…but nothing as romantic as that…the name drawn was Jannie vd Berg (of 1st team coaching fame) who had entered into a pact with his daughter to have a joint ticket chance….. Jannie also meant business…. and sussed out the board momentarily… pointed confidently to his selected card..(top row but one… extreme left hand side) fully expecting that his selection to be a weeeeena….but not such luck!! He was able to find us the Ace of Diamonds…much to the joy of the waiting crowd….singing cheerfully at his demise….which means another roll over…this week we have R89316 available for the lucky person selected at the Joker Draw…and with the improved odds…we now have 30 cards remaining….which means that 23 cards are face up and we are the same number of weeks into the current draw….we are reaching the congruence point at speed…..where the chances of finding are going to be simpler than missing it…time will tell though….join us this week and test your luck at being out newest Joker Draw winner…
Our National Rugby players had us in the throes of ecstasy and disappointment over the duration o the match…but our Bokke should have wrapped that match up in the first half… landing up with us all ruing the long lineout throws…whilst the interesting tackling technique displayed by Mr Farrell, had us all howling our discontent at the poor handling by the officials….another time will tell moment…of whether this is merely going to be a storm in a teacup….or whether it will throw international rugby as we know it into absolute disarray…or whether the Bokke administrators will show diplomacy or outright arrogance in their approach to this sensitive issue…. it is going to be interesting match this week based on Rassie Erasmus’s post match interview on future training of tackling techniques…..
The only Premier league side in action this week were our cricket boys…who made the difficult trek down the road to CBC to take on their might…which has proved to be a difficult task in the past…but this week we came up Trumps….albeit we made it difficult again for ourselves…the opposition batted first..and were able to amass 204/8 in their 50 overs., with Stefan Jordaan being our most successful bower with 3 wickets for 31 in his 10 overs……..leaving us with another difficult chase…we once again battled at start up being at 27/2 and 90/3…. but then settled in..and the next wobble was at 185/5 where we lost another three wickets before getting past the line with two wickets to spare…but with still more than 7 overs remaining…. another special mention of Vaughan Humphreys…who is going through a purple patch with the bat…as he smashed 79 off 94 deliveries..assisted by a twin 31’s from our skipper Kurt and Leon Killeen…which were able to bring the victory to Northerns…another character building performance by the boys….this week we are going to have our resilience tested to the utmost…as we challenge out traditional rivals Kempton at our enclave at the North…please come down in your numbers on Sunday to support our fellows…. I can guarantee that they will truly be appreciative of a solid crowd to support their endeavours this weekend…
If anyone was down at the Club last Wednesday evening…..will be able to bear testament that the Rowlin Annual Glow Run was another resounding success…well done to Jan his team of able volunteers….who ensure that the race was a pleasure to participate in…. this is the one race that I cannot believe the amount of “gees” and camaraderie displayed by everyone who participated or were on the side to “egg” everyone one to completing of the race…
We have a few events coming up at the Club in the not too distant future they we meed to diarise… Toy Run…..Kids Christmas Party…annual Christmas Pub Run…Christmas Golf Day… to mention but some of those forthcoming attractions… please check the Scimitar or our Facebook page for the applicable dates…
And that brings this week to a close….please contact me on rod.scheepers@gmail.com if you have anything of concern that you are wanting to bring to my attention…
Take care…have a great weekend….
Cheers….Rod

U12B Carnival lost to Bedfordview in a highly entertaining game. BNCC batted first and made 111 runs all out after 23 overs. Adrian made 44 runs alongside Hayden who made 19. Bedfordview went in to bat and by the time we had 8 wickets they had scored just 64 runs with things looking good for us. Jordan took 3 wickets, Hayden took another 2, and Evan took 1. Bedfordview picked up the pace with their batting hitting 4’s and a six at the end. They had 1 wicket to go with 3 overs. They ended on 115 runs. Such a great game played by all involved. On to the next one.
