BNSC NEWSLETTER
From me, a very excited good morning to you all…
Excitement you say?….how can the grumpy old man that sits in the corner speak of excitement….well, myself and close on 900 other Masters hockey players are descending on the coastal city of Durban to take part in the annual pilgrimage to the city chosen by the Masters committee, to ply our skills, renew/build friendships and acquaintances…and in general let our hair down (it is just a figure of speech Manny….I know I don’t have any hair!!) I’m sure as many of you remember, it is already a year since that same bunch of party people attacked the North and our facilities with gusto and panache…and left with many happy memories of our magnificent home…. This year the venue may have altered, but the same spirit and camaraderie that accompanies the Masters crew applies…so for the next few days, the Club will echo with stillness as the “old” people leave town…To all my fellow players, coaches, managers, umpires and supporters….please go down to Durbs and let rip….it is going to be a blast!!
As a consequence, this weekend there will be very little in the way of hockey at the Club, but please keep all the players that are travelling and playing in your thoughts and prayers over the weekend….may they travel safely, play well and bring back piles of happy memories and stories to be retold again and again over the passages of time….
Remaining on the hockey theme…we have recently had one of our very own, Dale Griffiths (who has been part of our first men’s side for over 250 matches already), representing the SA over 40 side in Europe at the World Cup…where our national side came a very creditable 8th out of 15 teams…. well done to Team SA…but definitely the cherry on the cake for Dale, was that he was chosen as the SA player of the Tournament!!! What a phenomenal achievement Dale… I’m sure that Dale in his usual modest way would say that it really was a team achievement, but we all know the massive impact that Dale has had at the North….I am sure that his colleagues in the SA team feel the same way… We are most proud of you and your achievements Dale…well done…
Our rugby boys have slowed down on the 15 man game, but their focus is now firmly placed on the 7’s format…the leagues will soon be out when we will be able to have more definite information relating to the times, dates etc….if there is anyone who would like to join in with our Club at 7’s….please contact Glenda in the office for the Chairman or Vice-chair’s contact details.
All our Soccer boys finally came to the party last weekend…with both our sides registering wins over Germiston….the second side enjoying a comfortable 5-1 win…to keep their lead at 8 points over the second place in the league, but Luso do have a game in hand….there are just 5 games left…so the end is in sight…keep up the hard work and you will earn the just rewards….the first side were also victorious, although the score line was only reflected at 3-2, I was able to watch parts of the match…and can confirm that Jannie’s side played some wonderful soccer, but just couldn’t score to get the final result to show the supremacy that they had in the match….keep up the good work boys, I’m sure that if you keep playing like I saw on Saturday, you will steadily move up the ladder from your current sixth position….This weekend is a massive match for our boys….the “Benoni derby” with Old Bens is back…and this Saturday it is at the North…so festivities will begin at 1.45 with the second team…whilst the firsts will “lock horns” at 3.30….. We will have a “beer only bar” in the beer garden in front of the Athletics office, where cans will be sold…in addition to all the bars being manned as well…please join us for this showpiece of the Benoni Football calendar….
The Second side have progressed through to the quarter finals of the Cup…and this will be played at the Club on Thursday 9th (the public holiday)….so join us then too, in support of our all conquering seconds….All the best to Fish and his charges.
Our future first team stars, who are currently representing us at Colts level are enjoy considerable success this season….In their last two matches, they have beaten Sporting 5-0 at the North and then travelled to Wits and had another comfortable result, this time winning 4-0….this weekend they host Alberton at home… please join us all in watching these young men in their plight to bring some silverware home to us…. With a bit of new for the bragging rights articles…there are eight of these young Colts who have been chosen to represent our province at district level….Kawanda Sokutu, James Mavimbela, Matthew Welgemoed, Kaylem Jordaan, Dane Adams, Michael Juanas-Uriol, Lifa Mthimkhulu and Andisa Hola are to be congratulated…well done lads…I am sure that you will wear the provinces colours and badge with pride and honour…
Our Friday night was a loads of fun, with Billy and Martin entertaining us…playing us some foot-stomping favourites…but with no winners on our Members draws….it was left to Ingrid Blankers (who’s name was selected from the beeeeg black box) to show us if her skills were any better at locating the joker on the board….but alas! She had the same luck as the 6 previous attempts and could only reveal to us where the 9 of Clubs had been hiding….but for all the rest of us (well…apart from the Masters Hockey players) that is good news…as the Joker Jackpot has moved up to R65015…. This week we will be having all our Karaoke skills on show…so please some an reveal your talent up at the Club from 7ish on Friday….perhaps we have some hidden Idols talent on show…
That is my lot and all I have for this week…to anyone that happens to be also going away for the long weekend…please travel safe and enjoy your weekend…to those who remain…remember that on Thursday, the bars open at 10am whilst on Friday they will return back to normal trading hours…
Take care…cheers Rod
Ingrid Blankers drew the 9 of Clubs. Joker Draw sitting on R65015.00 for Friday 10th August. Be present to win it!!

What a wonderful way to celebrate your birthday with people you love and surrounded by things and Peeps that you have a passion for. I was very fortunate and blessed. Thank you for every big person and every little person that made this possible. You are special from the littlest to the biggest Peep. Thank you for all the donations that the kids from the Children’s Homes received and for our Club Benoni Northerns Sports Club and their staff that helped to make this day a success. – Adele Keyser Steyn
