The Scimitar 6 Feb 2018
BNSC NEWSLETTER
Hi there everyone….
I’m sure that someone put something into my coffee last week…a week when I was in school never disappeared as quickly as this one did…it feels like just yesterday that I was penning the last Scimitar message and here I am doing I again….better not tell my wife, she’ll say I’m starting to sound like my Dad and it is an “age thing”…which of course I will never admit to…(do we ever??!!)
And as we have had another week mystically vanish away…it means that we have more sport to look forward to this week…the weather was kind to us last weekend, so our planned battles against our opposition were able to be fulfilled and concluded….we have many satisfied Members as most of our teams did emerge victorious, but for those who lost, may we walk away for the match with greater wisdom and experience, with a little more knowledge of how to beat them on the next occasion.
Friday night was a little (being the operative word) quieter than normal…everyone seemed to be off in different directions, so those who came to the Club, had a lovely evening, with no major waiting for drinks or battling to find seating….I thoroughly enjoyed my evening, but in part, I think that was attributable to a “stand-in” rocker, who wowed those in the Scimitar with some phenomenal guitar work and played some real rock classics….
And before the entertainment we had our weekly draws….the name out of the box this week was Buddy David (another bit of the little humour again)….and his selection turned out not to be the Joker, but the King of Diamonds!!…. so we have another week to build up the Jackpot and it is now waiting for you this week….and the pot has grown to R56066….still nothing to sneeze at….so if you’re up to it this week, we would love you to join us…. The Members prize now stands at R1400, which will be drawn at 19h00 (with all the raffles and beer draw) followed by the Joker draw at 19h30…last ticket sales in the region of 19h20….and always remember, you have to be here to win it…This is a presence draw…if the person who’s name is selected does not arrive at Joker Display within 5 minutes of being drawn…the name will be discarded and another will be drawn….so make sure that you stay the person arrive and also see the new card being selected, as there is still a chance that new name may still be drawn…
It is the Rugby AGM tomorrow night (6th at 18h30)…. your attendance will indicate our support of the newest Sub-section….they are also having their practices on Tuesdays and Thursdays….we’re looking forward to a most positive season…
Our Soccer lads had a disappointing start to the season with a 2-1 loss in the first derby of the year, which was hosted “down the road”…but the positive is that the next two games are at the North (albeit across the road) and if we are able to win both of those, we should still be in for a semi-final spot….Coach Jannie told that there were some great positives from the game and will be looking to build on those in the weeks to come….This week both our sides are at home against Kempton…join is from 13h45 for the seconds and 15h30 for the firsts…bring it home boys…
The Premier league cricketers had another good win on Sunday, beating Duduza by 9 wickets….Coach Nic was able to experiment as well, because this weekend we have the big one….playing Kempton away…..if we could ask that our travelling fans please pop along to support…our boys are going to need our voices to shout in unison…. All the best boys, give it your all….
Our runners are still hard at work, each morning I hear the voices chatting as they go past my house, they really sound like a happy bunch…I have also seen that over the weekends the car park is getting fuller in the mornings, as the entrants to the Comrades start to realise that the time is “min” and some serious miles need to put in….and with time getting short, it reminds me of a “legendary” friend of mine….Bringee Alexander, who used to decide three weeks before the race (which was in those days held at the end of May and as a green number runner, he did not have to qualify in those days) that he was going to run the race that year…he would put in about 200 km’s of training and at the start would keep a few rand in a plastic bag which he would spend on a beer or two at Drummond…..for us masses glued to the Comrades television coverage for the day we watched and waited for the progress of our family and friends….low and behold 5 minutes before cut-off, you would be guaranteed to see Bringee and a “bus” of people converging on the finish-line….a phenomenal athlete and person too….Bringee completed 18 comrades marathons, played hockey and cricket for the Club and was very active in amateur (and professional ranks too) dramatics…..for those that don’t know or remember Bringee he was the ever popular “tramp” who was the guest of honour at many functions, events and weddings…..I also remember him being bliksemed on many occasions by irate guests who didn’t realise that he was the live entertainment…. But I will leave more of that for another day… Definitely one of the Northerns Heroes….
Hockey 5’s are up on the Astro on Sunday…pop up to see how the 5’s work, with very much and indoor idea being played on an outdoor surface….piles of fun and plenty of hard running….
I’m off to the pink day at the Wanderers on Saturday, hope to see some of the Northerns faithful there too…. Have a great week… Remember to send your compliments or complaints to rod.scheepers@gmail.com
Cheers Rod
