The Scimitar 5 Sep 2017
BNSC NEWSLETTER
A very good day to you all
Every time I think it is spring and time for shorts and a tee shirt, I get a rude awakening…I had to pop up to the North on Saturday morning and felt the bitingly cold wind that had arrived to say, keep the your shorts in the cupboard for a little longer….fortunately as the day wore on, the sun warmed us up to have a great day for the Sport and Brandy lovers…but more of that a little later.
The runners had their first run if Spring…and I witnessed them having a great party after the conclusion of the run…the hockey boys had a festival match to bid farewell to Des and Brendan (who are both emigrating – all the best with your new adventures) and they added to the mornings celebrations…which became afternoon celebrations.. and finally for some, evening ccelelbrasssions…or something sounding like that when I spoke to Vellies late into the proceedings…..
I see that our Fridays are becoming more popular again….the lunch time crowd is beginning to grow…and the with the Joker draw becoming a sizeable number now…we are starting to see some new fresh faces and old friend joining us for the Friday night festivities. For those that weren’t here last week, there is good news….we have another carry over…Craig Dingle was able to show us where the eight of spades has been hiding…and the elusive joker has still not been found….thirty three weeks have gone and it means the odds are improving weekly…we only have twenty cards left…and the joker is one of those….as the Joker remains elusive, the jackpot keeps growing and this week has topped R145 000… come and try your luck…at only R5 a ticket, it is surely worth a bit of a gamble to see if you can be drawn and be our next BIG winner….
Our Members draw was also not won, but I think as the Joker draw climbs we will definitely attract more of our Members and this will be won soon too. Last Friday we hosted the band Dream Catcher, who are an old favourite with our Friday night crowd.. and last Friday was no exception…there was plenty of sing-a-along and dance music…and they will be back soon again…This week we host the Wilsons, Leon and Stewart…who are a unique duo…and play lots of old and new covers…pop along on Friday and enjoy their brand of entertainment.
Saturday saw us hosting the Brandy festival…with lots of music and partying….one of our local Benoni groups, Crystal Park, played out to an enthusiastic crowd…followed by many other supporting acts… the headline artist for the night was Jack Parow… whilst he is not everybody’s cup of tea, he is one of South Africa’s most popular recording artists and enjoys a loyal support base… thanks to the Green for the great organisation and for using our grounds for your event…
Our soccer boys had their last home game of the season against Luso…the second side had a great win 3-1, which took them up to second place in their league…well done to Fish and his boys…the first side were 3-2 up when the match was abandoned with about 15 minutes left, after the referee brandished a couple of red cards to the Luso defence. Some really unfortunate incidents occurred….and the referee decided that in the interest of player and official’s safety, that he call the match off…. I was very impressed with the Northerns players and supporters that rallied behind the officials, guiding them to safety. It is utterly disgusting and disappointing to see that their players and spectators are unable to behave in a respectful manner. I trust that the perpetrators will be dealt with swiftly and efficiently. Our sides travel to the club down road on Saturday.. to contest the second chapter of the Derby! Old Bens were able to hold the upper hand in the first clash…hopefully we can turn that around this week… Spectators are reminded that their grounds are licenced (as we are) and are to please NOT to take any alcohol with to the match…the same way as we expect of their spectators to respect our licence, please let us do the same at their facility.
Despite all the on field shenanigans at the soccer with Luso…our faithful had a great afternoon and evening at the North…some enjoying the music….others just relaxing with the comfort of their favourite tipple…
On Sunday we hosted the hockey boys and the sunny weather warmed up proceedings very nicely…and we had an amazing day…the beer garden was alive with all the players…as their season draws to an end, the boys are enjoying all of our facilities and we have received many compliments on all the improvements.
Speaking of the renovations…I can’t believe how well the entrance has turned out…with the cladding complete and today the security doors were installed…it has started to look more like a hotel lobby than the entrance to the North…and I am battling to actually remember what was there before… It looks really fantastic and with the store and change rooms now nearing completion, I am really chuffed that we got the go ahead from the Members to complete these alterations…. We need to get going with more fund raisers quickly that we can begin with our phase two….
On the subject of Fund Raisers, don’t forget the “two Old Farts” will be in the Hall on September 16th at 19h00… this promises to be a hilarious evening with Tony Stewart and Mel Miller… Tickets are R100 each and can be purchased at the Bars or book a table with Glenda on 011 849 3410 during office hours…
This Sunday we are hosting the Easterns Senior Mens soccer finals…starting at 11h00….with our 4th side taking on Boksburg at that time…while at 15h00 our colts team have Bonaero as their opposition.. Good luck to our boys… we will be there in full force to support….The Banyana ladies are using our fields to practice on this week…so if you are wanting to see their training methods and maybe get a chance to meet them…pop down to the North this week…the times under the Football Section in this newsletter, on our Facebook page and on the website..
Also remember that Saturday is Bok Day, with R5 off all beer quarts for the duration of the Springbok / Aussie game @ 12h00 and the New Zealand / Argentine game @ 09h30…join us to begin the day’s festivities early.
Our staff are all looking forward to seeing you all over the weekend…take care…and have barrels of fun!
Cheers Rod
