The Scimitar 31 Oct 2017
BNSC NEWSLETTER
Good day to one and all!!
The weather forecasters did mention that we were in for a cold snap…but it definitely did not cross my mind that they were in fact going to be correct….the rest of their bad news regarding hail and massive thunderstorms, fortunately did not materialise over Benoni, but I was told there was a massive hailstorm near Witbank….so we were lucky to escape that part of Mother Nature’s wrath….But we did have that bitingly fresh wind that arrived just in time for our Night Market…and we saw quite a few gazebos trying to earn their “flying wings” along with some umbrella’s from the beer garden, which was enough for the Night Market exhibitors to decide to rather pack up their wares until next month…we have thus far been very fortunate with the weather and this was our first cancellation for the year of our Night Market…and will hopefully be the last too!! There were a few food stalls that hung around to sell their stock, as I’m sure they would lose some serious amount of fresh food with a cancellation…so please bear it in mind, that even if the Night Market is cancelled, there will still be food available for sale at the North….so still pop along and enjoy some culinary delights if the weather happens to be hideously crappy….
Because of the weather, we moved our band into the Ladies bar…and what an evening it was….Saving Silence , with Danie and Ryan….had the crowds bopping and weaving…whilst others were caught singing their lungs out to the popular tunes that were pumping out….
The Athletics honoured their achievers and stalwarts at their annual prize giving… a great evening with a Mexican theme…needless to say…with the copious quantities of tequila consumed, there were a few less numbers braving the conditions for the Club weekend run…. Congratulations to all the winners…well done…may you continue to strive and achieve and be an inspiration to all your fellow athletes….
And now for the Joker draw followers who weren’t able to make it last week…you may breathe a little easier….Craig Norris was only able to find the deuce of Clubs….so with no Joker making its appearance…we have another carry-over!! And this time our jackpot has moved up to…..wait for it….wait…TWO HUNDRED THOUSAND ONE HUNDRED AND FOUR RAND!!!! Yes! We are back over the two hundred k mark…and we will expect to cook again at the North again this Friday…our Members Draw was also not won…so that has also moved up…and now stands at R5000!! So starting at 19h00 all our members have the chance to win R5000, two cases of beer….and for a wager of only R5, you could also be chosen as the next lucky winner to expose the joker and have over R200k in your bank account in a few days… We also have the return of Bonesy and Mike…to serenade us through the evening…they have proved to be a very popular duo…playing many favourites… making everyone put their dancing shoes on….so come along and join us for a fun filled evening.
I was able to watch some of the under 8 cricket match in that freezing weather on Saturday morning….and I must admit I was immensely proud (our young men were fashionably adorned in their new threads…looking very smart I must say)…watching the enthusiasm of these little boys is something to behold….the excitement generated by these little fellows is absolutely contagious…and I was enthralled… and also very privileged to have been witness to a budding national hero in the making…well done to the parents for braving the cold with their children…thank you to the boys for making my day a lot warmer…and the final kudos go those guys who fill the thankless task of the coach, you guys absolutely rock!! A massive well done to our Cricket Premier side, who were victorious by 4 wickets last weekend…Great stuff chaps keep it up…
Tomorrow night is the Annual “Glow Run” or Night Race…where the Northerns faithful take to the streets…the more serious competing in the 10 and 15km distances…while I will get my takkies on to try my hand (or is it feet) at the 5km walk…just to prove to myself (and all my other detractors) that I can finish the 5k’s unaided and in more or less an hour… (I think I need to purchase one of those godawful hats (very practical though) that have the convenient little holders for a couple of beers and complete with a straw to ensure that my beer levels are maintained at an acceptable level for the duration of the race….) It promises to be a great and festive event…I also love the spirit of the occasion and the way that people always go out of their way to purchase extra glow sticks and dress up to make the occasion and the Glow Run such a wonderful event to be at….
I mentioned recently that we were in the throes of purchasing another ReelMaster Mower for our grounds….. Thanks to Bryan (for testing it in Cape Town), Andrew (for sourcing and being the old mother Hen in ensuring that all the t’s were crossed and the i’s dotted) and Anthony (for organising the transport and safe passage from Cape Town up to Gauteng)…. It is now in Gauteng and will complete the last leg of its momentous trek (not as auspicious as the 1838 version, but will definitely rank as one of Northerns most historical in terms of current day scams, pilferages and of course to avoid the notorious highwaymen along the way too)…and will soon be gracing the Northerns fields… Brian Buys is champing at the bit and cannot wait for his new “toy” to see how effectively it can assist him in further improving our playing surfaces…
The junior soccer players concluded their season with their prize giving on Sunday… and from all reports another successful season for the boys…. Well done to all the coaches and players…but as always, a special mention to the untiring efforts of the committee, without whom none of this would have been possible…well done….
This weekend, we have a pretty full schedule of sports…a schools T-ball tournament on Saturday, whilst there is a large Tumbling event on Friday and Saturday at the John Barrable Hall…we are hosting senior Baseball on Sunday…with Cricket being played on both Saturday and Sunday across all of our fields….Hockey 5’s will be at the Astro on Sunday again too… so if you have a few spare minutes….please come and watch our talented sportsmen and ladies in action.
I’m running out of space.. cheers Rod
