Good day from a muggy office at the North…
The rain that we were blessed with a little while back…has had some magical results on our grounds…and the fields in general are looking magnificent…I get quite excited during summer as we see the transformation from the winter “vaal” to the spring and summer greens…everything looking lush and happy again…hopefully everyone out there is feeling the same way as Mother Nature…
Our weekend began with another great Friday…I really enjoy the vibe maintained by junior cricket…majority of the boys practicing…the click of the red leather ball on a crafted willow bat always creates a village green feel…and over the past few years, their parents when they bring their children to cricket practice…have a little unwind in the beer garden….enjoying a frosty refreshment, chatting to friends, new acquaintances, committee members and coaches…a really wonderful atmosphere to end the working week for most…some of the lucky boys get to play their weekly match under lights…and this is a marvellous experience….braai smoke, spectators of all shapes and forms..(last week we even had some premier league players down to watch)…and of course this inspires these young men….irrespective of the results…they are hooked on the game and they go home satisfied and tired…eager to acquit themselves even better on the next occasion…running back to their transport to take them home….constantly practicing their bowling action…or sometimes a particularly good defensive batting stroke…or an expansive hook or pull shot….it always fills me with pride and admiration at their enthusiasm, for allowing me to watch their energy and passion that these young players have…
Continuing on busy Friday night….our Members draw has still not been won…and it is climbing by R200 every week…with it now up to a sizeable R3600….all Members are welcome to join is for the draw on Fridays at 19h00…only Members who are present, may qualify to win it….so come along this week…it may just be your turn to be drawn….the joker draw took place at 19h30…and all the ticket holders were holding their breath…that perhaps it was their chance at finding our elusive Joker…and the slip that came out of the beeeeg black box…was none other than Aliastar Hamilton…who has already had his name drawn out the hat for this draw…I think the Club should really consider selling Aliastar’s seat off….it has certainly had its own share of luck in the not too distant past….anyhow, enough of the lucky seat in the house… was it going to be third time lucky???…Aliastar had obviously decided before the time what his selection was to be…as he pointed out his choice as soon the door opened….and as it has for the last 22 weeks…the yelps of joy, the shrieks of laughter and spontaneous singing indicated that the joker was not drawn…in fact the six of hearts showed where it had been surreptitiously in hiding since the opening of this draw….and with the carry over the jackpot climbs a little more..this time to R87351…and we have one less card face down…..so 31 cards remain… we are fast approaching the half way point in this joker draw… good luck to anyone who would like to alter their circumstances…R5 is all it takes to be part of the draw….and if your slip is selected….you could be our next joker draw winner….
Last week we had a late cancellation of Cedz, but Ryno readily jumped in to assist us….thank you to Ryno, who is another firm favourite of the Northerns faithful…and he cranked out great covers, one after the other…to have the crowd baying for more…. This week we welcome back an old friend to the North Peter (Bones) Ball will be back after a trying time…he is back on the circuit with us…and I would ask anyone who has seen Bones…please come through to support this wonderfully talented musician…who has overcome some serious health issues since we saw him last….but he is fired up and ready to perform at the North for us…he is bringing a mate of his with…called Rich….and Bones says that if there are any Pink Floyd fans out there….Rich does a mean cover of Comfortably Numb…. I await Rich who will be making his debut at the North, to make my own judgement call…but knowing Bonesy as I do….he will be spot on….
Our senior cricketers set the scene alight with some scintillating performances over the weekend….and although they weren’t all playing for the first side…they definitely deserve mention….
In the Ladies massive score of 380 in 35 overs…Lila Nell was outstanding with 167 not out…well done… Fabio Longueira bagged himself a mammoth 247 not out in the Directors league win by 315 runs against Katlehong….awesome stuff…whilst I was able to watch the promo side…who had their score bolstered by a blitz unbeaten century from Brett Martindale in only 55 balls..I think the fielding side asked the question on more than one occasion, which fence do you want me on, skip? The boundary or the perimeter fence?…. in their comfortable 183 run win over Actonville at the North…
Our Premier Sunday side had a great win over Actonville by 5 wickets in the Benoni derby match at the home of the opposition….Actonville batted first and were looking very solid at 121/3…before Northerns took complete control…dismissing the remaining 7 batsmen for a meagre 11 runs….leaving Northerns to chase 133 to win… Vaughan Humphreys again starring with the bat….scoring another half century…ending up with 60…. we were able to pass their total after only 22.2 overs for the loss of 5 wickets…a great result boys…let us keep the momentum up…. this week we take on a side that caused us some headaches in the past…and we travel to Boksburg for a match against CBCOB….all the best to all the sides that are playing this weekend….enjoy yourselves…have a blast…
Tomorrow night sees the running of the Rowlin night race….for those that have no participated before…please come down…there is a wonderful festive atmosphere…the people are ever so friendly….and of course the glow sticks create images that highlight and literally light up the runners and their chariots…colours, excitement energy (add a few wee drops of alcohol) and it promises to be another memorable evening of fun at the North…in fact it is quite breathtaking…hopefully I will see many of you out there….
That is it for this week….please send your complaints or compliments to rod.scheepers@gmail.com … if however you would like to tell me face to face…feel free to come and introduce yourself to me… hope to meet you all soon
Take Care…Cheers…

For a number of years now there has been idle talk about organising a BNAC trip to an international marathon, though nothing yet has transpired. Rob Brons has taken the first step in making this happen. As this will, unfortunately, be an expensive trip we are trying to give everyone plenty of notice so if need be people can start saving. We are going to be going to the Athens Marathon in November 2019. The race is 10 November 2019. The projected dates are to leave South Africa on 08 November 2019 and leave Athens on 11 November 2019. If you are interested in this once in a lifetime opportunity please contact Robert Brons on 082 774 9997 or robertb@icon.co.za
