A warm and humid good morning from an island off equatorial Africa….
Today…I do not look out on the beautiful avenue of oaks at the North….but rather from a hot and humid Zanzibar…where I am fortunate enough to be spending a family holiday…pristine white powdery beaches…aquamarine blue seas..and balmy holiday weather to match …and just to explain…Zanzibar is like Durban on steroids…hot but with humidity to make sure that you are in a constant glaze of perspiration…albeit the temperature has not exceeded 30….I felt like I was back in Natal in my youth…with drenched clothing from 6 in the morning till late at night… but just because I am away from the confines of the North… doesn’t mean that it was any further from my heart than it usually is….
Friday saw the start of our usual weekend of madness at the North….but with a new development…which allowed me to proceed on my holiday bound route….I was able to welcome Shepherd back from his very tragic and sad Zimbabwe trip….he has definitely lost some weight…so I think we will need to fatten up our favourite son…which will allow him to continue to work at his fast and furious pace…welcome back Shep…your family at the North have missed you so dreadfully much……
And then on to Friday evening….our first night market of Spring…and with Nature’s penchant for throwing a spanner in our work….she brought down the rain…sending everyone and everything scurrying indoors for cover….the travelling footballers were treated to an indoor meal sit down…while the joker draw sales were relegated to behind the ladies bar counter…I think Lockey had more requests for tequila than for Joker tickets…and with the band setting up in the bar too… it meant that the Ladies bar was a cog of action for the evening…..Omega showed us exactly why they are so popular…playing tunes for the young and old…displaying their style and class…which also included some special guest appearances…. a great evening of music….this band is always of the “please come again” list… and onto the joker draw…the beeeeeeg black box produced a new name for this round…as Hutch was the lucky fellow from the pile of names it contained…..and he seemed fairly certain at his choice….but his system of analysing came to naught…. as his pick proved to be the five of spades….so we now move onto week 19….18 cards have been revealed…and there are now 34 left…while the winning value has moved up to just short of R80k….R79668 in fact….so please pop down this week to try your luck at producing our next winner of the joker draw….
Saturday and Sunday we hosted a ladies football tournament at the North…with some quality ball skill on display…the Natal sides displaying some rare finesse and touches…this is the second year of us hosting the tournament…and we trust all the players and administrators enjoyed their time with us….we love to have players from far afield to share our fantastic facilities with…
Our second soccer side unfortunately did not have the fairy tale ending season that we were all wishing for them….going down 1-0 to Linhill in the Final on Saturday….Fish, you and your young team still have every reason to be very chuffed with your performance this season…with the mantle of league champions and runners up in the Cup being a tribute to your brilliantly creditable seasons performance….we are all extremely proud of your team…not just for the wonderful football skill displayed….but the spirit they maintained and their attitude and behaviour are a credit to the Club…well done….
Our even younger side seem to be following in the footsteps of the second side….as our Colts have wrapped up their Super League in style…with still a couple of games to go…. after 22 matches (of which only 2 were drawn) they cannot be caught by the chasing pack….so massive congratulations and kudos to the boys, who displayed some very mature characteristics in overcoming any obstacle in their way…well done fellows….a special word of thanks to the coaching staff…who have worked together to mould this bunch of talented players into a winning unit…. well done to Enrique and his most able colleagues on a job well done….
Our rugby boys played in a 7’s competition last weekend and although not landing up on top of the pile….were able to win the bowl section of the competition…this season has been an eye opener for us all and our boys…who have improved steadily every week….a special word of thanks to the players and coaches…who have stuck manfully to their task…and are finally reaping some rewards after a long and arduous season… well done guys…great news and this augers well for the future….
And as we move into the summer…. the winter sports are crowning their champions of league and cup….and the summer sports are starting off their competitions….our Cricket boys played in the opening T20 competition…and got themselves into the finals against our arch rivals, Kempton Park….. not the final result we were wanting…. an eight wicket loss…. a real case of so near… yet so far…. I hope that the boys have learned a lesson…and that we will be able to overturn this result the next time we meet….
All the best to the cricketers as their season begins….it is wonderful to hear the click of leather on willow again….and the excited screams of “howzat” echoing around the fields again.
That is all I have for this particular episode…so I am going to love and leave you…I would believe that we could improve or that you particularly agree or disagree with the goings on at the North…please leave me a message on rod.scheepers@gmail.com
Thanks….take care…Cheers!!
