The Scimitar 25 Mar 2021
Good day to all from a cool and overcast day at the North…..
Seems like Cape Town and us have swapped weather, they are sunny and boiling, whilst here we have an 80% chance of rain and there is a fresh breeze lurking just to remind us that winter is only a heartbeat way….and with the next three weeks being four day working weeks, we will all have a little more time to spend relaxing…. hopefully in the warmth of summer rather than in fresh autumn weather….
We are fully back in the swing of things here at the Club….and may I asl that it remains this way for an extended period….It is now almost a year since this COVID craziness became a reality….and if it disappears I am sure that I am one of the majority who will rejoice…..it is wonderful to be able to interact with people again….hear the shrieks of delight from the children on the sports fields and also experience the commitment and tenacity of the adults as they enjoy their running and antics on the fields at Northerns and the roads in our area….all these sports has meant that our club house and bars are filled with patrons…. Thank you for the support….
On an interesting and historical note…..two of the legends at our home at Albert Bekker Park have been honoured with a very comprehensive report compiled in the local press this week….the Benoni City Times have featured Ted Jarvis and Manny Ferreirinho as heroes of the North…..the links to these articles are included in the newsletter…..let it be said that each and every one of us are indebted to the commitment and passion that these two gentlemen have displayed over the last 45+ years….without their efforts the Club would not be the Champion that it is today…..
TED AND MANNY……BENONI NORTHERNS SALUTES YOU!!!
A quick run down of the sports that have occurred and what is happening over the next week or so…..
We had the St Patricks day celebration run/walk pub crawl last week, which was a resounding success, despite the weather not entirely playing the game with us….everyone I spoke to said that they had an amazing experience….. most of our Members did not realise that there was a bar at the Baseball or at our Rugby fields…so now when they see there is a Rugby match on…or they see that Baseball is being played, they can pop across to watch, knowing that will be access to a quick frostie or two….thanks to all for joining us and to all the organisers for a super event that will definitely be welcomed back with open arms…
Our Soccer boys had the resumption of their leagues last week…with the second and first sides taking on Alberton…the second side was a ding-dong affair….real end to end stuff…..with both youthful sides giving it their all, plenty of quality goals, both goal keepers pulling off astounding saves….Northerns were first to score followed by an Alberton equaliser…..once again Northern took the lead and Alberton almost immediately regaining the parity…..when our boys scored to take the lead again with almost half of the second stanza remaining…Alberton threw everything at our goal….but our defence was resolute and held firm to emerge as 3-2 winners on the night…. Great stuff…as we carry the two results from last year…we now have 3 out of 3 and 9 points at this stage of proceedings….the first side was a more organised and structured affair, and the very disciplined Alberton took the lead to go into the break 1-0 up….this was a match of two halves…with Alberton dominating the first half…and Northerns coming out with guns blazing in the second half…to equalise shortly after the break after change in the home team formation…. Our coaches have said they were satisfied with the result between these two very evenly matched sides and are happy with 2 wins and a draw after three matches in the current league….this week we are away to Impala….hopefully the first team can get onto winning ways again….and the reserves can keep their momentum going….best of luck to them all….junior soccer have started practices, so expect an influx of excited footballers from just after Easter…..
The joker draw this week also had no winner as Mike Williams drew the Ace of Clubs and pushed the jackpot up to R27451….we move into the second third of the draw as there are 36 cards now still face down, with 17 already uncovered….join us this week, try your luck at finding the Joker….last ticket sales are at 19h20…with the draw taking place at 19h30…
Cricket T20 finals are on this weekend (Sunday) with our Team 1 in the semi-finals at 09h00….followed by the finals at 14h00….join us in “not watching” the Final from the beer garden and Deck…. Junior cricket will still be played on Saturday as usual…..
