The Scimitar 22 May 2019
BNSC NEWSLETTER
A bright and fresh good day to you all
After having a little cold snap earlier in the year….we are now being blessed and are experiencing a bit of an Indian summer weather at the moment….shorts and tee’s seem to be the order of the day whilst you are outside and enjoying the sunshine….but you are still needing a bit of a light sweater to be donned when the sun makes its move from west back to the east…..that said, there are still two Eskimo’s at the North dressed up for the ravages of winter…as Glenda and I prepare to do battle with our “ice-box” office for the remainder of the cooler months….
With our previous joker draw now won and a thing of the past…the attendance and vibe at the Club was decidedly a different proposition in comparison to just one week ago….and all the Members voiced their opinion and happiness as to not having to stand in queues to wait for drinks…they were able to find seating easily…and there was no need for using your elbows in trying to move around at the North….but with the Joker cabinet looking very different proposition, having a new pack of 53 cards face down…the person drawn from the beeeeeg black box was facing a daunting prospect…..when the allotted time arrived, I had to scratch around in the box, which was considerably lighter than last week….and after rummaging around inside for a while, I came out with Dennis Walton’s name, who is one of our loyal Social members…..he immediately made his choice and went for a card in the middle of the board, only to reveal the six of diamonds…..and so we start the process all over again….one card gone, a new week into draw number 8….there are 52 cards left and R51 524 in the “pot” available for next week….tickets are still sold in the Hall on Friday afternoons /evening up until 19h20 with the draw at 19h30…..your chances of being drawn these days is significantly increased with the lesser crowd…but then the chances of finding the joker are lessened with so many cards still available…..but you will at least have had a chance….so Jason, now is your chance of having your name called….buy a few more tickets this week…and R51 and a half k is nothing to be sneezed at….and I am sure that most people will be most chuffed at that amount being transferred into their account by next Tuesday…..so come along and try your luck…..
Last week our entertainment was one of the bands that have been with us since we started offering music at the North…and Coyote produced the goods once again…thanks to Billy and Martin for another great evening….Our muso for this week is Richard Thompson, who graced our Club toward the end of last year and is a most accomplished musician….come through and listen to his undoubted talent in the Scimitar from about 18h30….
Our Soccer players were on top form last weekend and both sides demolished their opposition Zwide…..the reserves white washing the opposition 4-0, whilst the premier side had their scoring boots on running riot with a 7-1 scoreline….the reserves are only three points off the top spot whilst in fourth place in the league….the first side currently occupy the 5th place only 5 points off the pace..so we have a fairly congested league table at the top…we definitely need our cream to rise to the top……so a solid start to the season for the Club….and with the brand of football being played by our boys….it augers well for the remainder of the season…..this week we are hosting Germiston at home….and albeit that they are languishing in the lower portion of the league….we would be silly to be complacent and under estimate their ability and relax…..so let us keep up our current great momentum and bring back all the points…..
The rugger buggers were back on song this weekend again…after a disappointing day the week before at Nigel….we bounced back with all the sides recording wins over the weekend…..well done all the ladies, who were also victorious this weekend, recording a solid 32-17 win against VUT…..in Meyerton, the U21’s had a runaway win 47-7…whilst the reserves had a bit of a nail biter….eventually running out 14-12 to the good…..whilst in a very high scoring match the firsts were got themselves back on the winning trail, eclipsing Meyerton 57-35…..so a great day and set of results from our teams….super stuff guys….this weekend we travel to Sasolburg…best of luck to all of our teams there….. all we can ever ask, is for you to play and give your best….
In a first for Benoni Northerns, we are also proud to announce that four of our lady rugby players have been selected to represent Valke at provincial level….Congratulations to Helena Yssel, Stompi Lowane, Rooies van Rooyen and Lettie Nkosi…..there are also some others that are on the fringes and have been earmarked as future stars, who will surely be playing at this level pretty soon…so please keep up the great work Ladies….we have really seen an upsurge in Ladies sport at national and provincial levels…and now that we are showing such intense interest at the North, it is fantastic that we are experiencing massive growth in this area….long may this continue…..
Our runners are starting the “slide” into the big one…I trust that you are all steering clear of the colds, flu and other bugs hanging around in the air and that preparation is all on track…..with less than three weeks to go, the excitement is building to Comrades 2019…..
The Club AGM will be held in the Hall on Thursday May 23, please make your presence felt by attending and having your say in the running of the Club….we will be kicking off at 19h15, join us in ensuring the future success of our Club…
That is it for this week…..a little shorter than normal….but if you believe that there are things that we are doing right or wrong that you would like to bring to my attention….please email me on rod.scheepers@gmail.com
Have a super week….hopefully I will bump into you around the North soon….
Cheers
Rod

8th May Benoni Northerns had a good round of results winning all their games. The guys played away at Meyerton and the girls played away againts Vut and also formed part of the Valke trails. The under 21s stays unbeaten this season winning all their games in the first leg of the Merlin league. The game was blown short due to a unfortunate big brawl that broke out but won the game 7-47. The second team had a close one but won 12-14 and only losing to Nigel in the first leg. The flagship first team put up a big score against Meyerton and was a team with alot of changes due to injuries but each player stepped up their game. The end result was 35- 57 . All the teams well on their way to play semi finals at the end with the great first round results. Last but definitely not least the senior ladies team won their game 32-17 . The game also formed part of the trails for Valke team and 9 of the players are in the training squad. Well done Benoni Northerns
