The Scimitar 21 Nov 2017
BNSC NEWSLETTER
MY HUMBLEST APOLOGIES….
This week as I have been pretty busy, I thought I could get away with just sending last weeks message out again…but I have found that one or two Members do read it…and they have come back to me to mention my error…it has been a little hectic here and I forwarded the incorrect copy to the publishers…all those who reminded me of my error (before 09h45 on Wednesday) will personally be bought a beer….again, I apologise for this oversight…
Good day to you all….
Wow…the next ten or so days are going to be hugely exciting…but that said…unfortunately most of it is not sport related…as times have moved along, we have found that sport and the sports people associated with our sport alone cannot carry the financial burden of successful financial outcomes of the Club in today’s times…which has dictated that in order to maintain our facilities and playing surfaces, we have had to supplement our incomes through different channels… this has allowed that our Members exclusively, do not have to personally subsidise the Club through massive subscription fees…our Committees have been innovative in their ideas and brought us events like the Joker draw, Colour run, beer festivals, the Beer Mile, Fun runs, quiz nights, Marathons and the like…and over the next little while, we will be hosting the ToyRun, the East Rand Show and a new one that popped onto our calendar in the last week…we are going the cultural route…and will have the Christmas performance of the world renowned Drakensberg Boys Choir…. I have see that this event has piqued the interest of a lot of Benonians and we have been flooded with calls as to the availability of tickets, seating arrangements, whether reservations can be made etc.
I am personally very chuffed that we are able to host these young men…my thanks to all the people involved….it has been a whirlwind of activity to ensure that this became a reality…and if the weather plays along this will be a massive success…just a few things so that everyone is aware…due to the late notice of us hosting the event, there will be NO pre-event ticket sales…tickets will be sold only at the gate (ticket sales will commence at about 16h30)…the event organisers will be roaming the grounds to ensure that everyone at the concert have the relevant markings / bands. Excess parking will be provided on the John Barrable Hall side of the Club grounds. Could you please bring your own deck chairs, picnic blankets etc…the event will be held on the Ted Jarvis hockey field…food and refreshments will be available….same rules as always in order for us to comply with our liquor licence, please do not bring your own refreshments into the grounds…a mobile stage (similar to the Gig Rig of the ToyRun) will be erected on the Tennis Club side of the hockey field…and as it will be an open air event, it could weather affected, let’s hope that Mother Nature plays the game….but please join us…this promises to be a great evening of entertainment.
On Friday we have our Night Market and Movies in the Park….the movie this week is “Home Alone”, an all time Christmas favourite…I remember my children watching it over and over again…prompting the next words of McCauley or the baddies…cheering and hooting with laughter every time that the baddies fell for another of the young boy’s ambushes….. Music this week will be provided by the Wilsons, Leon and Stewart, who play music from the 70’s right up to the present…and will also have some their new stuff too…..Stewart has a new album that is available on YouTube…if you go to our Facebook page there will be a link to this album…
And I have left it for the heart of the newsletter…the joker is still not won! Ssshhhh….don’t tell too many people, so we all have a better chance of winning….last week Bruce Nortje selected a card that turned out to be the 3 of Spades…and with the massive response we had last week, the winnings are up to R239 764 for this Friday…there are now nine cards left to choose from so the chances of there being a winner, are 1 in 9….so a little more than 11%…bring it on….remember that last ticket sales are at 19h15(ish!), but the draw is definitely at 19h30….The Members draw was also not won last week so that has also climbed this week…by another R200 and sits at R5 600…so we’re in for a cracker of an evening…Night Market…with plenty of food and craft stalls…some great entertainment…and then the Members and Joker draws….please come along and bring your mates along too…
Sunday sees the return of the annual ToyRun…we have had a long and very successful association with this fabulous charity event…Bikers from all over Gauteng (and some from further afield too)….between 10 and 15 thousand bikes are expected…. descend on the North…each and every biker has to pay the entrance fee…which is a minimum of one toy per bike….all these toys are distributed to the underprivileged over the next few weeks…which is a massive logistical task…but one that Lions do extremely efficiently every year….our thanks to Peter Beart and his Lions team for their massive and continued support…this is always an enriching and enlightening event….to witness the generosity of the biking public and of course to hear the roar (and sometimes whine and purr) of these machines…..there will be plenty of foodies and craft stalls at the ToyRun…and there will be music available all day…. Jump onto your bike and join us for this amazing experience….
Our Premier cricketers had a frustrating weekend…with them having their match postponed late in the week….I’m not sure how these things are allowed to happen…I trust that this won’t ever occur again… as this type of action casts doubt over the abilities of the authorities who control the sport…. for the rest of the sides there was only one loss on the weekend…so a pretty good set of results for the Club overall…well done boys…
I saw that quite a number of our Members competed in the 947 Cycle race last weekend…I trust that everyone who participated had a successful race and everyone achieved their goals….I did see a couple of the participants yesterday…and they looked like they had spent a week on a horse…I hope that your recovery is quick….( I have it that a cold beer at the North, enjoyed with a few mates, is the best remedy for this particular injury)
This weekend there is very little senior sport on at the Club…with only a little cricket being played on the Clubhouse side of the fields…as with all the ToyRun activity on the far side of the grounds….all of the fields on that side will be utilised by this event…
A short and sweet message for this week….I hope to see you at one or more of the happenings at the Club this week… have a blast in whatever you happen to do….
Cheers Rod
