The Scimitar 20 Feb 2020
Good day to everyone
I can’t believe how quickly this year has already flown past and we are already approaching the end of February…Our National cricketers flattered to only deceive again…as they again won the first of the meetings with England and then allowed the opposition to get back into the series and finally we fell away completely in the last match….I must say that T20 is exciting stuff…as we witnessed over 760 runs collectively in 80 overs between the two sides only….and being separated by one single run after the first two internationals….but in the third, it appeared that our bowlers let us down as the English passed our total with some space to spare…this week, we welcome back the “sandpaper” crew and hopefully we have a better showing against them…time will tell…but I will not be holding my breath about the possibility of us beating them… maybe I should watch the behind the scenes footage rather…that may prove to be more exciting…
You will see that we are beginning to approach our winter as these sports start gearing up….and junior Football start off their registrations this weekend….expect to find plenty of excited young children scurrying around at the Club from early on Saturday morning…which will continue for the next three Saturdays….while next Saturday, hockey will join with their registration day….both Junior and senior in the beer garden…. (bwahaha….probably and appropriate venue for the seniors…..)
Our cricketers performed the impossible on Sunday….going from thrashing the same opposition the week before to having to eat humble pie this week…as Boksburg beat us by 4 runs….Boksburg were asked to bat after losing the toss….and scored 199 in the 48th over….Matthew was our destroyer in chief…ending up with 4/22 in his ten overs….and after an initial hiccup in our reply, by losing Musa early…things were going along in a most jolly fashion at 85/1, with both Riaan and Vaughn well set…when disaster struck and we had a massive collapse…losing our next six wickets for the addition of only 18 runs…and then it was left up to the bowlers to right the ship….which they almost did…Daniel and Lance getting 35 each…but the bridge was too far as our last wicket fell with the score on 195…. leaving us short by 4 runs….a most disappointing day, as a win would have taken us to the top of the league…. but our fate is still in our own hands…as if we win the rest of our matches….we will probably land up at the top….but it starts this week again…with a home fixture against the other Boksburg side, CBCOB…which have given us some problems in the past….it is time to knuckle down and show us what you are really made of…wishing you all the best… play well…
The soccer boys travelled to Luso in the traditional season opening Top 8 competition… and in two fiercely competitive matches….the spoils were shared….each match going to a 2-1 result….our reserves coming out on top in the first match, whilst the first side landed up on the wrong side of the result in the main match of the day… these results have not gone exactly to our liking in the first two matches of the year….but I am sure that the coaches are extremely happy to have these tough games to finalise teams and tactics for the forthcoming season….This Saturday we host Alberton at home (C field) in the final of the pool matches….I am sure that the boys would love to have your support….the Coach will make its first official showing in its new livery….join us there for a drink or two or…….
Benoni Northern Sports Club are extremely proud of Football in becoming the 1st recipient of a new trophy introduced by the Easterns Football Association.
“THE ELFA CLUB OF THE YEAR FOR 2019 SEASON”
We are very proud of the Chairman and the Committee for all the hard work that was put in to receive this deserved accolade. Well done !
Rugby are still hard at work practicing their skills as their friendly season kicks off next weekend….anyone in for a massive big party on the 29th, to please contact the rugby committee for tickets to the masked ball which they are holding as a fund raiser…..please refer to the flyer advertising the event… and join in the fun…I am sure it will be an unforgettable experience…
Our joker survives another week in hiding….as Jeff Skilbeck had his name drawn from the beeeg black box, for his first attempt in the quest to find the joker….and his decision to look in the middle of the bottom row proved to only reveal the five of hearts…..so we now look at one card less to select from and the jackpot climbing to R55397… join us this Friday…tickets are still only R5 each….please keep in mind, that when this draw is won, the cost of a ticket will be moved up to R10 a ticket…our sales team is on duty every Friday in the Hall until last ticket sales at 19h20 with the draw taking place at 19h30…I hope that you are able to join us this week…
Hockey 5’s comes to an end this week with the finals being contested…I am sure it will be a day filled with a feast of hockey… and with the Coach now getting set to be a lot busier, it will make an appearance at the Astro…to ensure that the spirit are kept high…..please come along to support…
Last Friday we had a new band on show as Bad Scooter displayed their talents on the patio….and they will definitely get a call back….a thoroughly enjoyable evening with you guys, thanks Jeff….this week we have an old favourite returning Ryno and Freedom Unfound join us in the Scimitar….and with Live and Ed Kowalczyk back in SA in November, we will be listening very closely to their version of Lightning Crashes and a Dolphins Cry to assess the quality of the covers….see you on Friday…
We are approaching the end of our financial year….and remember that we offer the “same deal” as always to Members…if you renew your Main Club Membership before the 29th of February, you will still pay 2019 rates….with the new rates kicking in on March 1…..the start of the new year will also mean that selling prices in the bar will also increase….our suppliers seem to continually raise their prices and our margins are under continual pressure….please remember that Members will still enjoy a discounted rate on our pricing structure as in the past…
Hope you all have a great week….see you soon…
Warm regards Rod
