The Scimitar 19 Nov 2021
A sunny good day to everyone out there….
My favourite time of the year is definitely producing my sort of weather….some sweltering heat, splattered with thunder showers….which means swimming and cold beer weather are on the menu on an ongoing basis….I’m sure I heard a few “hear-hear’s” from the Members… We should be on the annual slow down (or is it quicken up) before the holiday season….but with all the to-do about the pandemic, it still doesn’t feel like a normal year for me….that said, the ToyRun will not be held in the normal form again this year….with the limit of numbers of people able to attend, the organising committee have decided to only have a drive through again, so no entertainment, limited stalls, half of the mass arrival….it is a little disappointing , but in the light of the pandemic and the restraint placed on activities, I fully understand the dilemma faced by Peter and his team….
On the positive side….the idea to have a Friday Food Tuck Fiesta is starting this week….the trucks will be parked on the avenue of Oaks lining the road to the Tennis Club….please join us from about 16h00…there will be a variety of cuisine available…..we will have chairs and tables available near the jungle gym….some more available in the beer garden….and if there is rain affecting the evening…we will have these tables and chairs in the hall and on the patio under the tent…..we will also have music entertainment every Friday again…this week we kick off with karaoke….so all the aspirant and budding Idols participants can come along and test their talent at the North…. There is still our usual fare of Joker draw and weekly raffle available too….and the junior cricketers will also be practicing on Friday afternoon, so we can expect a very jolly and happy bunch to celebrate the start of the weekend with us. Load shedding will not affect operations as we have a generator, which will fire into life when Eskom fail us
Next Saturday we are also playing host to the Green and their Gin and Beer Fest…this will be held across the road, on the corner of Hanekam and Brodigan Streets….and promises to be another amazing day out…..please follow the links on our Facebook page and other social media platforms for ticket purchases and more information…. Remember the date November 27, 2021….
With soccer and rugby now being in recess, the only active winter sports are junior baseball and Hockey 5’s….the fives is in full swing on the weekend…please contact Shaun Tayler for more details…the junior baseballers are practicing and playing over the weekends….I have seen quite a lot of activity during the week from the schools too….it is lovely seeing that the kids are not all locked up and are able to get out and play some sport in the open air again….
Athletics –
Athletics have again been active with their time trials and Club runs…..and as we approach the end of the year, there are all sorts of fun functions and runs planned…and then the annual prize giving to look forward to as well….contact the athletics office for more details, if you are wanting participate or join….
Cricket –
Unfortunately our cricketers were taught a comprehensive lesson by Bedfordview on Sunday….losing by 95 runs…Bedfordview won the toss and elected to bat, scoring 255/8 in their allotted overs….their number 8, Leander Lubbe notching up an impressive 57 in 28 balls adding to our misery…..in our reply, we stuttered along with 5 guys getting into the 20’s….but no mainstay, meaning that we were rolled over 160 with just over 4 overs remaining….this week we travel to Kempton Park to play Avion Park…let us hope that we overturn last weeks result and bring home all the points….
Social –
Please don’t forget the social sections golf day on December 5th….to be held at the Police Golf Course in Hospital Road….an early start (05h30) followed by the prize giving at the Club at 13h00
Joker draw –
Still elusive…after 7 weeks we now have R14316 in the jackpot, waiting for someone to choose his hiding place… pop along this week…it could be your chance to be drawn….
