A bright and breezy good morning to everyone
After the weekend away at the Hockey Masters Tournament, I think I need a long weekend to recover….an absolute blast of a weekend…it was marvellous to see plenty of old friends and acquaintances, met and made a few new ones too….played hockey of an excellent standard….and of course tried to party like full-time students again….I am sure that everyone who was there can bear testament to this fact….despite there being a fair bit of travelling between the various fields of play (which we at our Tournament last year didn’t really have much of), but all the matches were played on Astro Turf (which of course is the way the game is played these days) and it was an experience deluxe…my thanks to the organisers of the tournament…well done, it was a tough act to follow from last year…and then to our province Eastern Gauteng….massive kudos and congratulations….(and I think I echo this on behalf of all the players) your sides were a pleasure to represent, which we did with great pride…we were all professionally kitted out….whilst the “gees” amongst all the fellow players was amazing,,, whether we were on or alongside the fields, at the hotels or at the functions, it was plain to see that Easterns are definitely a force to reckoned with….well done to my fellow clooeaguies and players on a marvellous weekend…
As I was away, I wasn’t here to experience the “vibe” of Friday night, but I did hea that Arthur Jones managed to get his ticket drawn out of the beeeeg black box…and despite his fortune at being chosen twice in pretty quick succession….his luck at choosing the correct card, did not change…..you definitely need to take some lessons from your wife Arthur…..his choice turned out to be the five of clubs…which, of course, means that there are happy Masters hockey players, who return to a roll over with the Jackpot this week rising to R66245….remember that the last ticket sales (and still at only R5 a ticket) are on sale in the Hall until 19h20….with the draw taking place at 19h30…. after last weeks Karaoke, we unfortunately didn’t have any new “SA Has Talent” contestants…so we have Freedom Unfound to rock us on Friday….Alan Knight will vouch that their version of “Lightning Crashes” as being a marvellous cover version…and I’m sure that this will be accompanied by a bunch of other favourites…so join us for a great evening at the North…
Saturday saw our Soccer boys in the soccer “derby” with Old Bens, who took the drive from down to the road to the North to battle for the Benoni soccer honours….our second side, who have been riding the crest of a wave…were humbled with a 2-1 score line…and this allows Luso to creep up on us and are now effectively 2 points behind us….again Fish, the best advice I can give is to keeo winning….and then all the speculation regarding how many points behind they are….really won’t matter…all the best…then onto our first side, who were the supremo’s of the day….ending up with a 2-0 victory…from all reports, we were superior in every facet of the match and fully deserved the win…well done to Jannie and the boys…we just need now both the sides to win on the same day, that we can don our party shoes to dance the night away….perhaps that will come this weekend…when we host Linhill Celtic at the North….let’s have a party chaps….
The Second Soccer side did enjoy some success last week, when they won in the cup, when the opposition, Zwide, did not arrive for the match…and we were awarded a 2-0 walk-over…so into the semi’s for Fish and the boys….I will keep you informed about the where’s, when’s and how’s of their next encounter…. The future stars of Northerns soccer, in the form of the Colts are still high riding in their league, with more success against Alberton last weekend….but this Sunday see’s a clash of the top-dogs as we take on Benfica at the our home at Northerns….this promises to be an outstanding match….so get yourselves up to the North on Sunday for the 3.30pm kick-off…see you all there….
Most of our Baseball sides were on point last weekend…with only the Major ‘B’ side narrowly losing out to the Mustangs…. However the Major ‘A’, Senior Reserves and Minors all enjoyed convincing wins over the Mets, Japan Express, and Palm Ridge respectively. Keep up that good form boys, as we move into the last portion of the season.
I did mention that our Rugby boys have moved their attention to the 7’s format…so if there are any maestro’s out there that are wanting to catch a game…please join them for practice on Tuesday and Thursday at the Club….
Hockey makes its return at the North after the Masters Tournament…so expect plenty of hockey revellers in and around the Club on Saturday afternoon and from early on Sunday morning….
Time to end up for this week….please send any jibes, jeers and cheers to me at rod,scheepers@gmail.com
Take care….keep warm…and I’ll see you at the North through the course of the week….
Cheers Rod
