The Scimitar 12 Sep 2017
BNSC NEWSLETTER
Hi there to everyone
Mother Nature must have been listening to me last week…and decided to turn the tables on me…from heaters to fans in a week…I think she was telling me that the winter sports must take a back seat and the summer sports must start practicing….summer is coming quickly…and the trees and grass are finally not ”vaal” anymore…yay..I love summer!!
This week was definitely different…we had Cup winners. Derby draw, fancy dress parties, chasing tsosi’s……with our normal duties and happenings still on the cards…
The good news for the Joker draw followers, last week the eight of clubs was found, which means we only have nineteen cards left with a Jackpot now of over R151 000!! That is incredible! Make sure you get here on Friday…a R5 wager could make you our next big winner…. Freedom Unfound are back in the Scimitar this week…so make an evening of it… wors rolls in the Beer Garden this week…so I’m sure the smells of the boerewors on the braai will make everyone’s taste buds tingle….
Our alterations are nearing completion…and the entrance is now becoming of a Club of our stature….I think it says, You’re welcome at the North, enjoy your stay… a radical and major change from the past, but definitely necessary… I’ve also had numerous people mentioning that the street appeal of the Club house is much improved, with the plaster bands around the windows and doors making a huge impact from the Eastern side. We have also decided to complete the windows and doors on the Scimitar in this manner, so hopefully by the end of the week, we will see the full effect.
On Saturday our senior soccer sides popped down the road to contest the Derby…and despite plenty of attacking forays into the opposition goal areas, both our teams ended their matches with a drawn result…I was able to watch the first teams efforts and I must be honest that I thought our boys were the better outfit on the day….and that we were able to overcome some interesting and debate worthy decisions from the officials, was of huge credit to the side.
On Sunday, the North played host to the Easterns Local Association Senior Cup Finals…and the atmosphere was electric. I was particularly proud of the Fourth Side (as I played for this side many moons ago) who overcame Boksburg in a very keenly contested match…Well done to the boys. Our Colts side were unfortunately on the wrong side of a 2-1 score line…but Coach Enrique and his charges acquitted themselves extremely well, being humble in their defeat and congratulating their Bonaero opponents on this prestigious occasion for these young men.
The hockey ladies had the Saturday off, but are back this week to have a mixed tournament to be followed by their prize giving. The hockey Men ensured that the Beer Garden was full on Sunday…and gave a lot of vocal support for the footballers who started their proceedings in the late morning. I am sure that Hockey men will be back in full force again this Sunday….join us at the Astro the watch…the first game starts at 08h00
This Saturday sees our Junior Rugby players having their tournament…unfortunately not at Northerns, but at Brandwag grounds in Aerodrome Drive. Hopefully next year, our facilities will be up to scratch for the North to be able to host these Juniors at our own fields. Good luck to the Committee in the organisation and to all the players, coaches and parent that will be attending to ensure that the day is a roaring success.
On Saturday we are hosting the “Two Old Farts” (Tony Stewart and Mel Miller) of Biltong and Potroast fame in the Hall…This promises to be an hilarious evening…if you haven’t already booked your table, please phone Glenda on 0118493410 to get this done quickly. Tickets are R100 each and proceedings begin at 19h00, dress is casual…so you don’t need to hire a Tuxedo Mannie….
Our cricketers had their trials last weekend…and I see have jumped straight in…they have friendlies this weekend already…good luck boys…I see that the improved pitch on the A field is looking a lot better than last year and I’m sure that the terrace will prove a popular spot to watch cricket from this summer…. may our sides take many wickets and score plenty of run this season…all the best….
And as the weather improves and warms up, I see that the crowds attending the Wednesday runs are increasing weekly, whilst the car parks are really busy on the weekends as the athletes start to have some longer runs to begin the road to 2018 Comrades…
We hosted two birthday parties on Saturday…which were really festive…the one being a fancy dress…so there were hordes of “Supermen” and “Batmen”…but of course the winner was undoubtedly the “Beast”…. if anyone was able to identify him, you may call him “Vincent” in future….
There was also an incident at the Baseball Club, which was broken into on Sunday evening…could I please ask that all Members keep their eyes peeled for any suspicious behaviour…and then report it to one of the Barmen or Guards or myself, Glenda or any of the committee Members… replacing doors and windows are costs that we can do without…I would far rather for that money be used for the improvement of our respective sports….
Baseball are hosting their AGM on the 19th September, the Baseball sub-section would appreciate the attendance of all interested parties…another interesting year is on the cards and they would really enjoy to have the support of the parents and players at this meeting.
Hopefully I’ll see you all at the North this weekend….look after yourselves…

BNFC 4th Side – 2017 League and Cup Winners. Well done Guys!!
Congrats to Bonaero FC who beat our Benoni Northerns colts A team in the cup final this afternoon 2-1. Just want to thank our fans at the North for all the support today, fantastic atmosphere. Just wasn’t meant to be after dominating the game, but that is football and we go forward, the future looks bright after winning the colts league and losing in the cup final with this young team.
