If you would just indulge me for a few sentences, before I get to the events of today, I want to share a few thoughts with you about the way I see our club, our members and the essence of who we are.
I looked around this afternoon and pondered about the future of what we have established, we who have been playing in Benoni for many, many years. None of us are as strong as we once were, but it is fair to say that our minds have remained reasonably constant, and with it, the experience we have gathered along the way is standing us in good stead. Some of us are a little slower of step, perhaps not quite as sharp of as we once were, but hey, we’re among friends of long standing, it’s no problem. It is also heartening to see that there are young players emerging elsewhere, some still in school, but I didn’t notice any short pants or gym slip around this afternoon!.
We must strive to grow our club, which I am constantly writing about. It’s a no-brainer, since new growth will serve to carry on the legacy that we have created for those that will follow us.I will continue to drive this forward, which I see as one of the major objectives for our committee. Before I finish with this subject, just ponder the following, which is a quote from that Russian fellow, Leon Trotsky.
” Old age is the most unexpected of all things that happen to a man ”
Talking about unexpected things, how about some of those hands today! Difficult to bid and equally difficult to play. The winners today were Vanessa and Sid Ismail, followed by Mary and Lisa and Peter and Neels in third place.
Remember that next week will be Teams on Tuesday night for those of us that are registered to play, then Thursday again.
Goodnight all,
Roy
