Bridge Results 22 May 2018
Tuesday night in the capital of the East. The night of the week which is characterized by bids and counter bids, by some players who have been seated at these very tables for more years than they might care to remember. Such is the character of the club and the vibes that surround one here. It’s really special to us devotees of the great game. We love this place of gathering, this place where we can stretch our cerebral muscles, strive to do better, to finally lie exhausted on the field of battle, victorious.( Thanks to Vince Lombardi for that quote)
Last night was no exception. The hands were challenging, the opposition was equally challenging and the battle commenced! I was able to play with my regular partner, for which thanks must go to Ian for fitting me into his busy schedule. But wait for it, he’s now off to the South Coast for his annual four month sabbatical in ten days time, so I am once again partnerless till he gets back, tanned and rested! Oh well, Troy is coming on nicely, but he’s still stuck on 1 Diamond and in any case, I don’t know if he would get membership at Benoni Northerns.
My apologies for the indulgence, let’s get on with the results from last night. There was another dead heat, between Anne and Diana, at 64.29%, and Paul and Bridie, also at 64.29%. Then, there was another dead heat for third between Judy and Heather, along with Di and Barbara. Then came the rest of us.
Next week is Teams, which we await with great anticipation, because the format is so fair, so measurable. We now look forward to tomorrow’s contest and expect at least 11 to 12 tables, maybe 13? Who knows?
In passing, let me just relate a comment I picked up about the Chettys winning last week, which I am sure they will appreciate. I overheard someone saying ” they don’t always bid at first, allow you to get into a contract that’s too big, then double you for penalties”. Well, well, I would define that as good bridge, wouldn’t you? This was for the Thursday crowd, and very well done to Nisha and Devan for their first win at Benoni Northerns.

PS. Re the comment in the title above. The definition of a split second is the amount of time it takes between the light turning green and the hooter sounding behind you.
