Eight tables of Benoni’s finest bridge players battling it out on a Thursday afternoon at Northerns. It could hardly be better than this. And for Trevor and Di it was especially sweet. Victory is always a good feeling, that’s why we compete, so very well done to them and to Yvonne and Gloria who came second and a quiet third to the two strange guys who play a system unknown to most other players.

The strange hands and weird distribution just keep coming, unabated. Most of us will admit to a bit of luck sometimes, this afternoon being no exception, but some of the hands were a bit of a lottery. Well, we also don’t want dead ordinary, easy to bid, easy to play, everyone making, type of hands, do we? Where is the fun in that?

In looking at the results I see that there are two pairs sharing the 50% jackpot, Gary and Veronica and Jerome and Priscilla. You’ll recall my joking with Jerome about his excellent No Trump declaring on Tuesday night and it’s very pleasing to note that he and Priscilla are going along quite steadily of late.

The other day I told my granddaughter that one of the great truths about bridge is to never, ever disrespect the bridge playing skills of a little old lady that you’ve never played against before, so consider the following.

Sorry, couldn’t resist it!, especially considering the average age of all us youthful members.
