Well done to Deirdre and Helen scoring 70,83 last night
Here’s Michael Lawrence’s (USA World Champion) comments on what to Open with a hand of 13 Clubs as Dealer:-
“I have never seen a 13 card suit before. my personal record is an 11 card Club suit headed by the AKQJ with 2 Major suit Aces. close, but still, not the real thing.if you open 7C’s, there is a fine chance that one of the opponents will believe you and bid something. they may go down a ton, but they may also either make or go down just a couple. what you want to do here is find a way to play the hand. Period. just play the hand. for instance, if you play in 5C’s, you will make 640 pts which is better than doubling the opponents and getting 300 or 500.while no one yet knows for sure what the best bid is on such a hand, the concensus seems to be that opening with 4 or 5C’s gives you the best chance of buying the hand. i vote for 5, myself. my intention is to bid 6C’s later or even 7, if pushed. hopefully, it will sound like i am saving and the opponents may choose to defend rather than be ‘pushed’ into a bad slam of their own.if you open, say, 1 or 2 or 3, the opponents won’t believe you when you later bid 6 or 7.S. J. Simon once said that you should try for the best possible result rather than the best result possible. i agree. take what you can get, and then get away with, and not try for the whole cookie jar.”
