The Scimitar 8 May 2019
BNSC NEWSLETTER
A fine good morning to all
A week has passed and already the throes of winter are upon us….just last week I was mentioning the wonderful array of colours that cascaded through the trees…but this has now been reduced to only browns and the stark and angular traces of the branches are now apparent….as most of the leaves have fluttered to their final resting place….I have watched the Council and Club employees sweeping and blowing these leaves into orderly piles, bagging and in some cases burning them (and despite all of our cries to refrain from this practice, our requests have fallen on deaf ears….and the practice continues!!)…..but all this means that our winter sports are in full swing…and after some great results….it has been a weekend of celebration….
Let me start with rugby…as the rugger buggers have really put their shoulders to the wheel….in both the administrative and playing capacities…and the massive news is that we have registered our Junior Club with the Valke and had our first player registration day on Monday night and have experienced a fantastic response….and expect an even better one next Monday when the second registration takes place…good luck on your journey at the North to the new youngsters…I trust that you will be most successful and very happy in your new home….on the senior front…we hosted our third round of matches in a row on the fields at the North….as the opposition grounds were not ready for them….and another relatively successful day was enjoyed by the Club…the ladies went down narrowly 17-14 to VUT with the opposition scoring in the last minutes of the match, to ensure that our Ladies would not take home the honours….the second side had a convincing 63-10 win…..whilst the first team match was pretty close in the first half….but our boys ran rampant in the second half and ran away with a 62-18 victory….well done to all of our players….this week will be the Litmus test as we travel to Nigel to take on the side that we have battled to beat in many a season…..good luck to all, lets give them horns this week and something to think about….
Soccer also returned to winning ways with both the reserves and first sides registering wins on the day….the second side had a hard fought 2-1 victory….after being down at half time, showed a lot of fight and determination in registering their win….the first side played a very average Boksburg side and ran out easy 8-2 winners….they were superior in all departments and scored some magnificent goals throughout the afternoon to put the opposition under pressure…congratulations to the boys…lovely to have both of our sides bringing home three points…..this week we host Randburg at home….our opposition has traditionally been one of the quality sides in this league….so please come along an support…..it should be a fantastic afternoon of entertainment….
Our hockey boys were not as successful….going down to the odd goal against UJ ‘B’….but all reports were that it was a superb game…bad luck boys….all we can ask is that you do your best….the hockey girls will be playing on Saturday and should bring some laughter and jolliness to the beer garden….but the hockey boys have a bye in order to shine their marbles with their partners on the occasion of Mothers Day….may I take this opportunity to honour all the Lady’s in our Club and those that we know, who are fortunate enough to be called Mom…..may your loved ones spoil you and make you feel especially wonderful this Sunday…..all the best from myself, the management and staff at the North….thank you for your contribution in making the North a great place to be…..
Our runners took to their last official run before the Comrades…and were off to Boksburg for the Colgate 32…and in the true Northerns style and spirit…they all wait just before the finish and all our runners end the race together in a massive bus…I have had a look at the video and it really is goose-bump stuff…it must have been amazing to be part of this finish..it shows the Northerns spirit and style that they do things with….this weekend will be Riaan’s run (named after one of the founders of the athletic Club) and all our runners complete a 60 km run in preparation for the big haul in just over a months time….good luck to everyone..I hope it will be a fantastic day out for all….
Last Friday night entertainment was a bit of a last minute hook up…as my arranged soloist had laryngitis….and I had to cajole and plead with Ryno to come out to the East Rand to help us out at a moment’s notice….thanks to Freedom Unfound for filling the gap at the eleventh hour….it is greatly appreciated and I owe you one or two for that….this week?? Well, well…..look what the wind blew in…the Zimmer Twinz and their new vocalist will be performing in the Scimitar from 6.30ish….a firm favourite with the crowd…..I’m sure that Uku will be there to assist Peter to check that the winds of change don’t blow on the night….be there to experience this great trio….
The Joker draw is now attracting some serious interest and there was quite a crowd on Friday to try their luck at looking for the elusive card that everyone wants…..well the beeeeeg black box was really full and it needed my two hands to swirl the tickets around a little more…..and the lucky ticket that was drawn turned out to be someone who has already has his name drawn twice before in this draw….Aliaster Hamilton….he knows the drill so he walked up and after flashing his teeth to Enrique for the obligatory pic…he pointed to his choice….there were a few groans in the crowd…as obviously Ali had pointed to their selection if they were drawn…..the card was slowly revealed….to show us the Jack of hearts…..ecstatic response from the crowd…the Joker was still hiding and we all have a chance, (well maybe not me!!) at winning it next week…..Jackpot increases to close on the R200k level……and with seven cards left and R198 062 available…I’m sure we will have a full house this week….we will also have a Long Tom beer bar in the Beer Garden to make sure you don’t have to wait too long for your favourite tipple….and there is also have a promotion running…look out for the promotional girls and their wares that they have available….come early to get your tickets….I’m sure it will be a standing room only evening….
Please send any kudos or complaints to rod.scheepers@gmail.com…your feelings and sentiments are greatly appreciated…
Hope you all have an amazing week…I’m always around….please pop in to see me… cheers Rod

At a planning meeting, attended by all Sub Club Chairmen plus invited additional Sub Club Committee Members, held in 2018, it was agreed that we hold a R100 a ticket fund-raising drive to raise funds for fields and building maintenance. This initiative is being driven by Mark Hardman and your Sub Club Chairmen were all issued with books of tickets in 2018. We are currently faced with a repair bill of R45,000 for the big ride-on mower and a lessor amount of R15,000 for the smaller, older one that we use. Without these two machines, we will be unable to keep the grounds in the superb condition that they are currently in. Needless to say, we are receiving less and less support from Ekurhuleni and we can only assume that this will reduce further. Some of the other sporting facilities in Ekurhuleni bear testimony to this. Your urgent support in this venture is therefore requested. Your sub club chairman has the tickets – please ask him/her for them as we are planning to hold the first of 5 draws in May this year. Your support is and will be appreciated. Kindest regards, Laurence (Lockey) Brown – Benoni Northern Sports Club Chairman
