BNSC NEWSLETTER 

Hi there everyone……A bumper rainy last few days…with an abundance of wet weather…meaning that all of our fields are wet underfoot and all the players on our grass fields will be happy…fewer bouts of grass burns and less stud pressure for the next little while…and the grass will remain green and lush for a little longer….and all the water will contribute to better longevity of our fields during the cooler months from the improved grass covering…..

On Friday we has some serious thunderstorms during the course of the day…and I was a little concerned that the wet weather may affect our attendances over the weekend….I needn’t have been concerned…as everyone came out in their numbers….Friday night for the draw…Saturday for the junior soccer and hockey…followed by senior soccer and ladies hockey in the afternoon….whilst on Sunday the senior men’s hockey returned to the North…and we also had some more junior soccer to enjoy too….

Friday saw the return of the Wilsons….a most popular father and son duo, who are a bit like the “Stars on 45” of the eighties with their constant flow of music….it always keeps the crowds entertained and dancing….and as the excitement started to build up to the Joker draw time….but first we had the Members draw…which this week stood at R4800…and we finally had a winner present with us….and it was none other than the last “big” winner of our Joker draw….(which at that time stood at over R330k)….Delyse Jones…..well done to you Delyse…there have not been too many nights that you and your husband Arthur have not been absent….so perseverance has definitely paid off in your case…..congratulations….. and then off we went into the Joker draw….every week I have a few of the loyal Members who remind me that their name hasn’t been called before (or not in a very long time)…and this week was no exception to the rule….as Dave MacVay was one of those who mentioned to me that his name has never been called…and as he and his good wife Michelle had become parents again during the week, he could now do with the cash more than ever…..and the beeeeeeeg black box produced another surprise name….. and Dave had his name selected….and he literally skipped and jumped in to take his place in front of the Joker cabinet….he was jumping up and down and so excited that he couldn’t wait for his picture to be taken….as he definitely knew where his selection was going to be….so after all the formalities were complete by the cameraman…Dave indicated his selection….and awaited his fate…..I slowly turned the card over and revealed it to the crowd…..raucous applause from the crowd meant that Dave had not found the Joker….but had uncovered the King of spades…and with eleven cards remaining….we have the Jackpot up to R166949…..so with the soccer boys leading in song of “cheerio, cheerio…” Dave went back to contemplate his selection and the crowd breathed a collective sigh of relief…as it means that their chances are still alive for next week….chances of finding the Joker are improving each week….but as the “pot” increases….so do the numbers of people attending….remember to improve your chances and spend a few extra rand when you purchase some more tickets…be there on Friday to win it…Friday we will again be trying to unearth some new singing talent at the North…as we hold a Karaoke evening…. bring your best singing voice and any talented friends along to enjoy an evening of fun and laughter….

Saturday saw our soccer boys back at the North…hosting Kempton Park, who over the last few years have proved to be most worthy opponents and has resulted a great tussle between these two East Rand sides….the reserve side, showed their class and talent and fits and starts…but this enough to completely outclass their opposition and demolish them with 4-0 drubbing…well done fellows….this has moved them into tied second place on the log….and this week will be facing the side that are a point behind them…this should be another quality match….the first side were made to show some character…after slipping behind to an early goal…but showed great resilience in coming from behind to end up victors by two goals to one….both of our sides revelled in being able to play in front of their home fans and wish to thank all the support…it is truly appreciated….this week we travel to Moffatt Park to play Linhil Celtic and this side has improved over the last few years….so expect another closely fought battle….

The hockey girls started their leagues last weekend…and the beer garden was full of hockey antics of fines, singing and headgear of varying types and shapes…particularly in the Moms (FTC’s) and their daughters (Ya-ya’s) having to share the spoils in this particular match…lovely to have you back girls….hope to see a lot more of you in the future….the men made their appearance at the North outside the Scimitar the next morning…and they also brought their own style and panache with also lots of sing-songs and party tricks that have become synonymous with the game of hockey…..our first mens side also made their appearance, with a late Saturday change of fixture…and we were able to host CBCOB from Boksburg at the Astro…and it proved to be a game of end to end action…Peter Wertz opening the scoring for us….only to surrender the lead to a well taken CBCOB goal…..and despite opportunities at both ends….and these proved to be the only goals in this match…ending in a 1-1 deadlock…well done to both sides for some really quality hockey….

Our athletes are all busy with their training for the Comrades…whilst the organisers of our Marathon are hard at work….and soon we will see all the road markings along the route being “freshened up” in anticipation of the hordes of runners that arrive to compete in our “Robor Marathon”….which this year will be run on April 28….so please keep this in your diary…as there will obviously be some road closures, detours and diversions in and around the Club on that day…

Rugby this week makes its return to the North on Saturday as we host Sasolburg in the first league matches for the season…..please pop along to come and support our sides as we want to start off on a positive note….

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO ALL MEMBERS :  R100 FUND RAISING RAFFLE

At a planning meeting, attended by all Sub Club Chairmen plus invited additional Sub Club Committee Members, held in 2018, it was agreed that we hold a R100 a ticket fund-raising drive to raise funds for fields and building maintenance.  This initiative is being driven by Mark Hardman and your Sub Club Chairmen were all issued with books of tickets in 2018.  We are currently faced with a repair bill of R45,000 for the big ride-on mower and a lessor amount of R15,000 for the smaller, older one that we use. Without these two machines, we will be unable to keep the grounds in the superb condition that they are currently in. Needless to say, we are receiving less and less support from Ekurhuleni and we can only assume that this will reduce further. Some of the other sporting facilities in Ekurhuleni bear testimony to this.  Your urgent support in this venture is therefore requested.  Your sub club chairman has the tickets – please ask him/her for them as we are planning to hold the first of 5 draws in May this year.  Your support is and will be appreciated.  Kindest regards,  Laurence (Lockey) Brown – Benoni Northern Sports Club Chairman

  

BNAC’s very own Bright Mikolongwe ran his first 32 kms at the “Alan Robb” this weekend in time of 1:50:09.achieving 1st position. We are all so proud of you !! Well done.

     Irene Ultra Marathon – Handy Dumaver, Tyron Millar and Mpho Pilusa – 48km in under 5 hours. Great work Guys.

          

BNFC 2019 Junior League had their 1st games of the Season last weekend. u8 and u6(2) Leagues proudly displaying their skills 

        

BNCC’s Samurai Ladies are performing well in the Battle of the Roses T20 Tournament with winning all their three games. They will be playing in the 2nd Round Robin this coming weekend’s final on Willowmoore Park’s Main Oval at 3pm on Sunday. Good luck ladies.
