Good morning to all

I start our newsletter with some concern and trepidation….we had an unfortunate experience in front of the Club early on Monday morning….. where there was a hit and run on a pedestrian crossing Brodigan Street….as a Club we have actively been involved with road safety issues regarding this street for many years, which have, although listened to and acknowledged by the authorities that be, have not resulted in any positive results in improving the safety aspects for Club Members and members of the public leaving and entering the Club, whether it be on foot or on wheels of one sort or another….we have been told that there could be a traffic circle with the associated calming measures at the entrance to reduce the passing vehicles and allow the traffic to flow more freely….but nothing more has happened on the matter….one of our major concerns is that it may take a fatality for the authorities to eventually take note and be prompted into action….could I please request that anyone that has the occasion to have to walk across Brodigan Street….to please be mindful of the fact the motorists do not pay heed to the “Zebra Crossing”….take extra care if you happen to have to cross this busy street….please exercise all your road safety lessons of looking right, left and right again….do it again to just check again and then proceed across swiftly….. enough bad news and life lessons for now, but please be vigilant and keep an eye out when you do see people crossing there…. thanking you…

With all the rain at the end of last week….we experienced a major shut down of all the cricket matches from the water logged grounds and wet pitches…despite all the super human efforts by the ground staff and the cricket fields committee…..Mother Nature had the final say and even our Premier side match had to be called off early on Sunday morning…. so shared points for the entire league…means that we are still on top of the league with 3 games remaining in the league, we are still on top…but this week will go a long way to sorting out any aspirations that the top teams may have….as we travel to Barnard Stadium to take on our arch rivals Kempton Park on their home turf….I am sure that our boys will appreciate all the support they can muster on Sunday….first ball will be bowled at 10h00…..please join us to witness a great contest….

On the entertainment front, Friday saw the return of the Zimmer Twinz with their amazing lady vocalist who’s voice bears a striking resemblance to Stevie Nicks (of Fleetwood Mac fame)….her spectaular voice has a phenomenal range and they were able to keep the Northerns faithful on the edge of their seats pretty well mesmerised…thanks for a great evening….we will definitely see you again soon…..this week we are catering for the rock faithful…as we have Cedz and Tryst….who will perform hits from the 70’s up to current….look forward to some great guitar solos from Cedz as he show cases his rare and unique talent for us….

Our Joker draw seems to have decided that the regular Soccer Members are to be rewarded currently….as we had a Soccer boy drawn from the beeeeg black box last week…… Chad Bergstrom is another who has always taken tickets in the draw and mentioned quietly in my ear fairly often, that he has never been selected before…..so when he heard his name, the look of surprise across his face was a picture to behold…..and the moment turned out too much for him and he was unable to find the joker…but did uncover the hiding place of the Queen of Spades which was one row from the top in the middle….so…now we are down to only 18 cards face down…..35 weeks into the competition and prize money this week of R131093…..please come along down this week and start your weekend with a relaxed refreshment with friends, whilst listening to some great music and then have a little flutter at only R5 a ticket and you could walk out over R130k richer….

With the rain playing havoc with the white flannelled game…it was left to our footballers to maintain our name on high at the North…. and they did not disappoint…the second side had a very convincing 5-1 victory over Alberton to start off proceedings…the Top 8 has proved to be most beneficial for our sides in the build up to the season as the youngsters in this side have grown accustomed to the more physical aspects, intensity and speed displayed in the league….credit must be given to the senior and experienced players who have imparted their knowledge to the “newbies” and made them more comfortable in the transition from junior to senior level…. the first side had a fantastic first half, with Coach Jannie’s playing system starting to yield dividends, with the players understanding what is required of them on both the physical and tactical demands required…..a most satisfactory 3-1 win a result of dedicated work from both the coaching and playing staff……well done to both sides….those are the sort of results we like with both our top two sides bring home all the points…well done…this week, we will be hosting Benfica in our last friendly of the season as the league kicks off in the first weekend in March….

For all the interested parties in Junior Football, please remember that the Junior Football registration commences this Saturday at 08h00….there is always lots of interest and support for Junior Soccer, so expect to see plenty of noisy and excited little players milling around the Club this Saturday, accompanied by their flustered parents as they attempt to control their offspring (which is usually an impossible task!!)

Rugby kicked off their year at a pre-season tournament….allowing our under 21’s, reserves and firsts to play their first matches of the year…with the U21’s playing a strong Brakpan team and came out with a 15-0 loss…but the coaches are really happy with the team and tactics which shows definite promise for the season…..the second team played Delmas, but the opposition dominated the match and ran out 15-5 winners….coaching staff felt our team didn’t capitalise on all of our opportunities…but if we are able to push through our team is also looking good for the year….the first side presented their skills in an encounter against Brakpan seconds and were able to register a victory of 19-5….always great to start the season with a win….so we are on our way…..reports back from management were that they are confident of a great season for this season…please join them as they travel to the Springs rugby day this weekend…..and remember that practices are on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Club starting from 18h00…..

Please don’t forget that Main Club subs fall due by the 28^th February…and with the new card system being tested and implemented over the next week….we are most excited as we open a new chapter in the Club’s history….

Benoni Northerns Indians Baseball Star: Rowan Ebersohn’s excellent displays for the South African Senior National Team during last year’s seven-game home series against France, earned him some admirers in that country. Rowan was a standout figure for South Africa in their 5-2 series victory over France where he proved himself as the Most Valuable Player for the South African team. He hit the most home runs in the French Series and hit the most RBIs (runs batted in). Ebersohn (who was previously contracted to the Minnesota Twins) will play abroad again after being offered a six-month contract as an overseas player with French top-tier team – “The Rouen Huskies”.

        

 

     

 

16 February Benoni Northens played their first warmup games of the season. First up was the under 21s againts Brakpan under 21s that players in a league higher than Benoni. Unfortunately Benoni lost 15-0 but we expect our under 21s will do great in the league.  Our first team played against Brakpan 2 and won 19-5. Benoni opened the scores with a try early on and dominated the first half. Second half the rain came pourning down and was a more evenly matched second half.  Our second team played in the main game of the day againts Delmas. Delmas dominated the game from early on and won 15- 5 in the end. Benoni was in the game but didnt capitalized on all the opportunities.  We as the flagship rugby club of Benoni expect to have a great season with all our teams and need the support of our fans. Join us next week Saturday when we will take part at the springs rugby day.
