Last night when I got home, I was struck by my personal reaction to the events which had just unfolded over the past few hours. There we sat, North/South at table 1, comfortably ensconced in a cocoon of confidence in our ability to handle all the difficult hands that awaited our competence as bridge players. Three hours later we found ourselves in tenth place, against nine other pairs, reeling with a distinct, uncomfortable sense of having under-achieved, massively!

But, you know what? There is often another sense at play here, that of a little bit of masochism. It is so easy to tell yourself that it was all to do with the cards we received, or rather the pronounced lack of quality cards. One is able to wallow in self-pity, bemoaning the constant, never-ending, colourless, pointless, dreadful hands we picked up. It actually becomes enjoyable after a while, you are able to extract sympathy from other players.

But, behind us, at table 2, the table we shared with, the sitting North/Souths received the same cards, but did a lot better than us. There are no excuses, therefore, only a lack of application. You’ll gather that we didn’t enjoy the hands we received! And the way we played the few handouts we did receive! What a night!

The winners last night were Helen and Guylaine, with Di and Barbara second and Paul and Bridie third. Did I mention which pair was last?

Over to Thursday now. It will be the last session of the year, so please bring a plate of either savoury or sweet snacks, one per pair, so that we may all enjoy a little something extra tomorrow.
