With the Club Pairs Championship being played on Saturday, I got to thinking about several people who have spoken to me over the past year, particularly with reference to their own play. I often hear comments such as ” We have no chance against so and so”, or ” We’re never going to win here”. I have heard exactly this concerning the Pairs Championship and I get frustrated when I know that everyone has the innate ability to be able to improve. Yes, some of us, myself certainly, will never win the Bermuda Bowl, one has to be realistic. Well, not at this stage of my life! But all I’m trying to say is that we can constantly improve, we can analyse our results with our partners, we can adopt new conventions, we can eliminate some of the mistakes and by so doing, move up the ladder and compete with more and more success.

Good luck on Saturday, We start play at 0900, so please register by 0845, latest. And remember to bring a small plate of either sweet or savoury snacks, one per pair.

And now to last night, where Tor and Cathy reigned supreme, with Ann and Diana in second place. It was one of those nights where it was difficult to score well if your opponents just simply bid the correct contract and other pairs, at other tables didn’t! You all know where I’m going with this, don’t you? It’s frustrating, in the extreme, when your opponents simply bid and make a modest part score, but at other tables chaos reigned, so you end up with a bottom, having defended well and having done nothing wrong!

But that’s just the way it is and therefore the fact that we are playing 48 boards on Saturday, with ten tables competing, will tend to smooth out the vagaries that arise out of 5 table events over 24 boards. It’s just a lot fairer.

Meaning: In excellent order
Where am I going with this? There was a discussion last night over something or other at Table 4, between us and Guylaine/Vaun, where yours truly used the word to describe something that was in order, and it was met with bemusement.

Everything on Saturday will be Copacetic!
