Back at my desk at the North….so a warm welcome from a sunny North….
I have found that as the number reflecting my summers spent on earth has grown….time appears to pass quicker than it did in the past…when I was in primary school, it seemed to take forever for a week to pass…but our time on holiday…appears to have flown away in a flash….it feels like yesterday that the excitement was still building and we were about to embark on a dream holiday…now it is a distant memory…confirmed only by the flash backs in my memory banks….and the photographs that are fortunately a constant reminder that it did actually happen…we had a marvellous time….snorkelling on a reef in a nature reserve….a beautiful sunset cruise…swimming in the aquamarine blue paradise… tanning on powdery white beaches…experiencing some amazing sunsets..my early morning walks down the beach….of course we did savour the tastes of the local cuisine and did indulge in an odd few tipples (whether they were of local or international standards) and all these will forever be etched in my mind….but we are back in Benoni and it feels as though we were never away…..
So although I wasn’t right here…I still got the report backs on the goings on at the North…and was kept abreast of the news and reviews to muse over…. Friday night was another busy start to the weekend…with the Zimmer Twinz providing the entertainment at the Club….they have become some firm favourites with our Members…playing a wide variety of tunes which were enjoyed by all present….and so onto the major attraction for most on a Friday…. the Joker Draw….Glen, my able stand-in for the evening…..rummaged in the beeeeeg black box…and extracted a new name from the depths…Leanne Hellon was the name reflected on the till slip selected…..and she appeared to have sussed out the choices before….she calmly relaxed herself on the bar counter and made her selection….which, to everyone’s relief, turned out to be the ten of spades…again the partisan crowd broke out into spontaneous song and laughter….knowing that their chances of being drawn and winning next week…had just improved significantly….so 19 cards have been revealed and 34 cards(sorry I was on holiday last week and incorrectly reported that there were 34 last week…..I do apologise….my solar powered calculator obviously had lost its charge…and brain…from being locked in my suitcase for such a long time) are left to choose from….but the Jackpot has moved up to R81738 for this week….now don’t forget…you only need one R5 ticket to win it and you have to be present at the draw….come along this week to try your luck….we will also be having a home grown talent evening…with karaoke being presented on the evening…..so if you believe you are the next Voice, Idol or should not be on the SA has Talent show….pop down on Friday and showcase your talent at the North…
Our first and second Sunday cricket sides had good wins on Sunday which means a great start to the season for them both….well done lads…keep up the good work….this week there are byes for the Sunday sides as our National team play Zimbabwe at Willowmoore Park in a T20 international…Great to see international cricket back here in Benoni….I am sure there are a lot of our older Members who will fondly remember gracing that same playing field….it used to be presided over by a strict authoritarian with the name of Mister Bunce….and you never wanted to get on his wrong side….who used to prepare emerald green pitches that used to shimmer in the early morning light and was the nightmare of many an opening batsmen in those days….. but this is now the home of Easterns cricket and only played on by representative, provincial and national sides these days…
Our “older” Baseballers are all on tour at the moment…as the National Masters is being held in Port Elizabeth for the remainder of the week….good luck ot all of our boys down there…particularly our newly elected Baseball President Shaun Deysel….hope you all enjoy a great time….
Senior Soccer on a Saturday has been wrapped up for this year…but the Juniors have their Cup Finals over the weekend….and we have a fair representation of talent on display….Glenda has all the details of the sides playing elsewhere in the Scimitar….but I would like to remind everyone that the Super League Colts side…who I reported had won their league last week already (with some games in hand)…and now going to try to pull off the “Double” by competing in the Final in Saturday (14h00) at the Greek Club in Senderwood (near Linksfield for those who aren’t sure where that is)…please let us go and support them in numbers…I am certain the young men will appreciate some noisy and vociferous support from the stands… all the best to the lads….give your best…it is the most we can ask for….we have four other teams contasting Cup Finals over the weekend…these fixtures are also elsewhere in the Scimitar…please consult these for further information…our soccer section never rests though…and summer means the start of Vets league on Wednesday nights…whilst the Ladies are also in full swing….with both Ladies teams registering wins in the opening encounter of the weekend…means a cracking start to the season for them both…
Hockey 5’s will continue on Sunday at the Astro…and if last week is anything to go by…it appears that this sport is also growing exponentially…well done to the Administrators and researchers on coming up with the concept…it is lovely to watch….a game consisting of three periods of extremely quick non-stop action which appears to be most energy sapping…judging by the regularity of substitutions….definitely not a game for my Masters boys….
Rugby has wound down for the year…with the sevens “circuit” now complete…we were hoping to host one of the legs here at the North…but we are confident that next year we will have a 7’s tournament…that should be awesome….
I am going to bid you farewell for this week……if you believe we are doing things wrong (or right) at the North…please leave me a message on rod.scheepers@gmail.com Have fun…Cheers!!
