BNSC NEWSLETTER
A friendly welcome to all on this beautiful day….
The weather has been getting more “summery” every day…which I’m sure you all know is my favourite time of the year…I definitely am a “rugby, braaivleis, sunny skies and Chevrolet” man…some of our older members will remember the words and will possibly be humming or whistling the tune now…and will be cursing me by the end of this…as they now can’t get it out of their heads… “rugby, braaivleis, sunny skies and Chevrolet”.. “rugby, braaivleis, sunny skies and Chevrolet”..
There is some good news for me this coming week….apart from the rugby mentioned in the Nick Taylor ditty for the advert from the 70’s at the start of this message….I’ll be doing just that next week…I’m off on a little r&r and will hopefully have lots of sand between my toes for the entire duration…. please don’t miss me too much….he unfortunate part is that the week will disappear far too quickly….and I will probably be back before you even notice that I was gone!!
With the long weekend, the North was a little quieter on the sporting front…with most sports having a break….only our Soccer boys who represented Easterns, travelled down to the Coast on provincial duty….(a little more on that later)…
But we started off on Friday on a sad note…with the family and friends Trent Hennessy celebrating his young life which ended prematurely…..our condolences to his loved ones…while our thoughts and prayers will be with you at this difficult time….
As late afternoon rolled in at the North…..our young cricketers arrived to practice their skills and the click of willow on leather resounded at the North…with all the various age groups of young fellows…each frantically trying to hone their skills in readiness for the ensuing cricket season….and whilst all the active sportsmen were busy there….myself and the inactive were whetting our whistles in the bars…. the daytime temperatures had indicated that summer really is around the corner…Ryno and his crew of Freedom started to strum the night away with their version of some old classics…some newer hits and even one or two of their own creations..another super set from these talented entertainers…. our Members draws unfortunately produced no winners (although Jannnie van der Berg can feel a little hard done by….as his name was called out on the Members draw…but he was on provincial duty in Durban….so sorry Jannie….as a consolation, I promise to buy you a beer this week!!)….and suddenly it was 19h30…the crowd hushed in expectation…as the selection was done from the beeeeeg black box….and the name was drawn…..Alan Knight!!! (only the naughty boys, like Brent Coley have actually had the pleasure of meeting Alan, from in front of the “bench”)….and Alan quickly scurried up to make his selection as the possible Joker winner….again the crowd could barely contain their disappointment (at him selecting the three of spades) as they burst into joyous laughter, chanting and song at his misfortune…..bad luck Alan….back to the drawing board at your selection strategy….but that means another carry over…more money in the pot for this week…as it now rises to R77946 and another card has disappeared from those available….so 17 cards have already been turned and now there are 36 available…each week the odds improve a little on the joker being drawn…come along and join us this week….tickets are only R5 each and are on sale in the Hall….last ticket sales are at 19h20…with the Joker draw taking place at 19h30….
Being the last Friday of the month, we will be having the Night Market on Friday, which will commence from 17h00ish…please come along to support the local foody and craft stalls that we have available…It usually is a most festive occasion…in addition we have the most popular band Omega playing…this is the five piece band that entertains us marvellously every time they make an appearance….they play all sorts of music…form the way back to the current…and get most feet tapping and dancing….please join us for a great evening….
We are hosting a ladies football tournament this weekend, (which we did last year as well) so we welcome back all the players, coaches, administration and supporters…I trust that you will enjoy your time with us…as we will enjoy hosting you and will be watching you ply your trade with interest…
Quite a number of our soccer boys were selected for provincial duty with Easterns over the long weekend and while the senior sides did not fare as well as expected…the Colts (of which we have 8 Northerns members in their ranks) were able to win the trophy on offer…by beating the Pinetown LFA in the Final (actually a bit of a drubbing….6-0 being the final result)…well done to the boys…I’m sure it is an experience that they will never forget….
This Saturday sees our Second side in the Final of the Super League Reserve Cup against Linhill Celtic…(the venue has not been decided at the time of writing)…so all the best to our boys….please consult our Facebook page and / or the Website…to get further details as to the location of the match…we would like to have a sizeable support base for this one…so we are calling on all our Football fans, to crawl out of the woodwork and come and watch if Fish and his boys can bring back their second trophy to the North for this season…
I am sure that many of you will have noticed that Shepherd (our Duty Manager) has been conspicuous by his absence in the last couple of weeks….please keep this fantastic human in your thoughts and prayers as he has been smacked by a double bereavement, losing both his eldest brother and his wife in quick succession…..our sincere condolences and deepest sympathies are with you Melusi, at this devastating and extremely difficult time…..
Please let me know if you think we’re on or off track at the North…by sending an email to me at rod.scheepers@gmail.com…. Thank you
Cheers…take care…..Rod

CRICKET
Game 1 – T20 Vs Colombo Cricket Club Under 13.
Venue – Colombo Cricket Club
24/09
On what was a hot and extremely humid morning and excited but tired team arrived at Colombo Cricket Club. Northerns lost the toss and were sent in to bat. Wickets fell early and Northerns found themselves on 25/5 after 7 overs. The boys struggled along to end the 20 overs on a mere 94/6 with Nicholas ending in 32 not out. The boys took to the field waiting for that early breakthrough. Some solid batting from the opponents saw them dominating our bowlers. A batting mishap saw the first wicket come off a runout after Owen picked up and got the ball through to Nicholas (wk) who got the stumping. Warren got the second wicket off an excellent ball but the boys could not stop the onslaught. Northerns lost by 8 wickets.
Man of the match – Nicholas Thomas
2nd game vs St Sebastian College Under 13 – 14 Over game

Northens lost a bit of momentum with the opponents clawing back.Northerns found themselves requiring 11 runs off 12 balls with Aiden being the man of the moment, running hard and seeking the ball sweetly. Aiden and Owen finished the game off in the next 5 balls.
Northerns win by 4 wickets
