“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was………..”
Pardon me for being so serious on a beautiful winter’s morning, but I just had to share this with you, because it came to me during the two boards we played yesterday against Pat and Judy. We had just bid and made a Grand Slam in Spades, then followed it with a mediocre result on the very next hand.
I realise the quotation from Dickens is probably way too serious for your twice-weekly emails from my virtual desk, but it bears thinking about, doesn’t it? This game is a microcosm of life, where we constantly have our ups and downs, our successes, our failures. For me,the game represents the quality of competitive people, the reason we strive to get better, not to beat other people, but to improve our own performance. In doing so, we must always be gracious, both in triumph and disaster.
OK, OK, I indulged myself, just a little bit, but there it is.
Yesterday Vanessa and Jill ‘snuck’ in at the death, with an excellent win, followed by Roz and Shirley, with Tico and Bram a close third.
In closing today, did you hear about: The Lady who always went down one in 3NT? When asked about this she said she was just following her teacher’s advice: “Eight ever, nine never”
Absolutely finally, the one about the Elvis Presley coup, which I know Iv’e quoted before, but it was given to me on a plate a few weeks ago, so here it is again: It’s when your left-hand opponent leads from A-Q around to your singleton King. ” The King is no longer dead”
Have a great Friday folks.
Roy, sometimes a little serious!
