BNSC NEWSLETTER
Good morning to everyone
As I sit and look out of my window, I see the green of summer is disappearing very quickly, being replaced by the brilliance of colour of autumn…..and the leaves are now vivid yellow, burnt orange or a mellow brown…and I was only looking at the oaks!! I have these same trees in my street and whilst they are a joy to behold with their positives…amazing shade offered, a beautiful cascade of green which changes into different hues in autumn….in winter they offer a crinkly brown carpet…and this crinkly carpet turns out to be a full time job to dispose of. I can still remember as a young fellow, sweeping up the leaves, to only have some large truck drive past and his “side wash” would lift the leaves high in the air and distribute them all over…making it look as though I had not even started the work originally….and then getting chastised by my mother for taking too long in my allocated chore!! Sigh, the joys of life!
But with autumn comes our soccer season…and a great beginning to the new season for our top sides…the seconds and firsts posting 3-2 and 6-1 victories over Boksburg auger well for the future…and Coach Jannie said that there is room for improvement…so we are looking forward to a bumper season…fantastic news…this week our boys travel to Bedfordview…we hope that the boys can keep up this momentum….
From one winning side to another…our cricketers also notched up another fine win…this time against our Benoni neighbours, Actonville Spurs…in what must have been a difficult wicket, we batted first and notched up 175/9 in our allotted 50 overs….and then kept it very tight and bowled out the opposition for 88 runs….winning by the impressive margin of 87 runs…well done boys…please keep on feeding the fire…it is amazing to be able to see (and feel) the vibrancy and excitement of the cricketers at the Club at the moment…this weekend is another difficult fixture as we travel to Hoskins Park to take on United….we’re right behind you….all we can ask is that you play your best….
We have been quite busy over the last two weekends with Junior soccer registrations and last weekend with the Junior hockey sign-up day… there was plenty of nervous energy present at the Club, with an over-supply of young questioning eyes as the rules and regulations as the procedures were started and explained…to be followed by excited yelps and broad smiles from the boys and girls, as all the forms were filled out and the necessary financial obligations were completed….and they were now going to be playing Club sport for the next six months….welcome to all our new youngsters….may you enjoy yourselves at the best Club in Gauteng…these are the future stars of our Club…treat them well…they will ensure the longevity and success of the Club in the years to come…
I see that the Rugby practices are starting to be really well attended…that is awesome news that we are going to have a larger pool of players to draw from and will ensure that the depth at the Club is improved…. keep it up!!
Our runners are all training hard and getting themselves ready for the “BIG” one…only three months to go before the Comrades… I am now meeting them more often…while I am out on my early morning walk/shuffle around the neighbourhood…I encounter different schools of runners, who always seem to recognise me a long time before I am even aware of their presence…then to be greeted by their cheery “Morning Scheeps” is most heart-warming… to listen to their banter as they bustle past me is also quite inspiring…thank you for that!!
Last Friday was a wonderful evening…I really enjoy the dynamic atmosphere that the night market creates…everyone seems to buzz a little more than normal…the music by Coyote was really laid back and most enjoyable…it seemed that everyone had a great evening…and our Joker draw has experienced another roll over… before I drew the ticket out of the box, Aliaster, who was drawn out last week, mentioned that he thought that Martin (another of our regulars who sits in the same area as Ali) should really get his chance soon….and lo and behold, the ticket out of the box was Martin Iske!! Quite incredible!! Aliaster says that he thinks he may have a future in fortune telling…but we haven’t has any takers on Aliaster’s offer (he did mention that he would mention your name next week in exchange for a small fee!!)…but back to last week…Martin seemed most intent as he had already worked out before the time which card was he was going to select…but his system did not work out exactly as planned and he discovered the Queen of Hearts was his selection…and that means there is a little more in the pot for this week…we are up to R63 017….steadily climbing…our Members draw was also not won, so that in turn is up to R2 400…whilst the our band is for the lovers of Hard Rock….Cedz and his three piece band Tryst make their return…I remember the hit they were the last time they were here….hopefully they will pull out all the stops again….
Next Friday we are going to do something outrageously Irish…and celebrate St Patricks day 24 hours early….we will have a decidedly Irish dinner to nourish you for the evening and there will be Guinness available for the “die-hards” (not Bruce Willis though)…the band is Omega, who have promised a fair sprinkling of Irish sing along songs, whilst still keeping some tunes available for dancing too….there will be prizes for the best dressed and some other surprises on the evening too…please join us for a raucous evening of audacious fun including unrehearsed dancing, singing and inappropriate volumes of alcohol being consumed….also remember that at our humble beginnings, it was a joint venture between the Benoni Hockey Club and St Patricks Cricket Club that decided to forge a future together as Benoni Northern Sports Club….so we have some really strong roots to this special day in the calendar…. I will do a bit of research into as to the why’s and wherefore’s of the original name associated with the Cricket Club…more of that next week….
That’s my bit for this edition….good luck to all of you for the various sports to be participated and played on this weekend… hope it is a successful one for you all…remember to send your moans, groans or slaps on the back to rod.scheepers@gmail.com Cheers till next week Rod
