The Scimitar 30 Jan 2018
BNSC NEWSLETTER
A very fine and good morning to you all
On Saturday I awoke to heavy, grey, leaden skies waiting to drop their heavy loads of water back to Mother Earth…and I thought of our Junior cricketers….when you are at the Club, you can literally feel their energy and enthusiasm….and as my mind dwelt on the Juniors….I saw the rain start coming down, gently at first, increasing in pace as time wore on…and in my mind I heard the massive groan of disappointment of the boys, coaches and parents alike…these boys have had no Club cricket for the duration of the of the summer break…and now on the first weekend back…there is rain to cut short any chance of them plying their skills…I can just imagine the unhappiness in all those boys hearts….and I’m sure that the feeling was felt by coaches, parents and families of the players….hopefully this week the weather will play along and all the teams will be able to participate…and the boys will hear the crisp click of willow on leather again…
The Senior cricketers were able to complete their fixtures and our Premier side maintain their momentum, with another solid performance, a seven wicket win against Bedfordview….they are in second place on the log, 6 points behind the leaders Alberton, but we do have a game in hand…we are currently also one point ahead of our arch rivals Kempton…which means another do-or-die match against them awaits….this Sunday we entertain Duduza at home, starting at 10h00…
Our Soccer boys have gained momentum quickly and got themselves into the swing, hosting a friendly against Robertsham last week, which ended in a 4 all draw…there is some wonderful new talent that has joined us this year and with majority of our team being intact from last year and this augers well for the future. The Super 8 Competition starts this weekend, with our boys looking for early Derby supremacy…as we travel “down the road” to take on Old Benonians in our first official match of the season on Saturday…the additional teams in our section of the Super 8 league being Alberton and Kempton Park, whom we host over the next two weekends of the competition….please come along to support the boys in their quest to start off the year gathering some silverware….good luck chaps, do your best…
Rugby are having their trials over the next week…and then their training will begin in earnest…please all interested parties contact their Chairman Lourens Smit, for times and dates of these trials.
Our athletes have also been very busy…with a hectic schedule of time trials and club runs during the week (both morning and night) I hear that the morning runs have already split into two groups, in an attempt to make the groups more manageable…and to keep athletes with similar times together…and then these marvellous athletes then go onto compete at various competitions over the weekend…last Sunday was the annual Johnson Crane marathon, also held in Benoni (much to the despair of some motorists, who forgot about the run…and were in some major traffic snarl –ups)….we had a very large contingent at this marathon, with over 200 participants…lots of personal bests and great qualifying times for the two major ultra marathons (Comrades and Two Oceans)..I saw heaps of photographs and posts on Facebook…I heard plenty of reports and feedback that we are part of an amazing Running Club…that makes me as a member of the Club, very proud to hear (and it was over and over again that I head it)…so a very quick (but big) thank you to the committee, under the current leadership of John Ansell (and of course their predecessors) for the cameraderie and “gees” instilled in the Club and your members….it is a delight to experience…. and then for the final dozen mad hatters…who travelled down to East London to participate in the 70.3 IronMan competition…it is with great pride (and a little envy) that I can say that all our starters also finished the competition…so a fabulous effort from all of our participants…this is an epic challenge..and it has been a long road for all our medal holders, months of training of both the body and mind…and to just participate, let alone finish this gruelling event of a sea swim 2 km, followed by a 90km slog on a bicycle and concluding with a half marathon run is a phenomenal achievement..once again, my congratulations to each and every one of you!!….just in case you ask why 70.3?? This is the total mile equivalent of the race…a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile cycle and 13.1 mile half marathon…and you thought I was just a pretty face… snigger..snigger….I actually do sometime foray into research mode….fortunately the encyclopaedia of today fits into my pocket, it doesn’t weigh a ton as in the past or have to be housed alphabetically in my parents entrance hall library anymore…and I am a numbers man after all!!
Friday night saw Bard Knight being selected to find the Joker in the pack….but his selection (interestingly right in the middle) came up as the Jack of Hearts…..I say interestingly, as my lucky number is 27…and Brad drew the 27th card from whichever side you count (so really, slap-bang in the middle)…and would have been my selection if I was able to draw….so my theory is out of the window….but that said, I wouldn’t have found any of the other Jokers from the past draws either!! A quick reminder to never listen to my theories when it comes to joker draws….Enough woffling!! The “pot” now jumps to R53 897 for this weeks draw and of course there is one card less…so now only 51 cards left to choose from….And we have a duo of favourites strumming their guitars this week…Bonesy is teaming up with Ryno in a new Freedom Unfound…and they are bringing a drummer to complete a trio….should be a winning formula!!
Hockey 5’s will continue this Sunday and I see that the competition is “hotting up” as we get to the end of the season and play-off places are now of critical interest…have a great time guys, it is getting very interesting…
That is my lot for this week…I am having a little trouble accessing my old email…so could you please send your suggestions, proposals, criticism and chirps to me at rod.scheepers@gmail.com
Cheers…have an outstanding week… Rod
