The Scimitar 16 Jan 2018
BNSC NEWSLETTER
Good morning to everyone…..
Well… finally we had a Joker Jackpot winner…..2017 could not produce any winner at all…with our last draw of 2016 and the first draw of 2018 we have a Joker Jackpot winner….the Club was abuzz with activity and with only 5 cards left, I suppose it was to be expected that we would have a packed house….with hordes of the Members and their guests thronging into the North on Friday, it promised to be another memorable evening…and that it was… the night market proved to be another great success and our staff were absolutely marvellous. My thanks to my ever faithful and loyal staff….to them, I salute you….despite the trying circumstances, you guys came up trumps…from making sure that everyone had a parking spot, to cleaning up bottles, glasses and all sorts of rubbish, to ensuring that everyone had a cool drink…..even the weather played along….I would also like to express my thanks to the Main Club Committee, who give up their Friday nights to sell joker draw tickets…your efforts are appreciated and highly valued…thank you….also to the volunteers from the sub-sections who assisted in our satellite bars selling beers…thank you too, to sacrifice your Friday nights to make funds for your sub-section is highly commendable and appreciated….
So now we can get back to normality (is it ever normal at the North?)…Friday nights expected to be a little quieter again…but I am sure that the faithful will still be here support us in our quest to improve the Club and its facilities…the Joker draw will kick off this week with draw number six…and the jackpot will begin on R50 000-00….. still a massive number and a worthwhile value to start a Joker draw on….I don’t think that any of the other institutions that have followed our lead in this format are able to say that they will begin their new competition with that sort of kick-start. The format of the draw will remain precisely the same as the past…despite there being rumours that I have heard, that it will be a Members only draw….let me say this, that the success of our Joker draw has been that fact that it has worked using the current format……in March the Joker draw will celebrate its fourth birthday and this has been a revelation for the Club…. Long may it continue…
This Friday we have Boycott Ballad entertaining us, and despite the Joker draw being won, our Members draw remains without a winner…so this week it will climb to R6600…getting close to another record….but you have to be present to win it….please also remember that Main Club subs are due….but if you pay them before February 28, you will still pay at the 2017 structure, so the quicker you pay, the more you save….
Cricket began their season on Sunday with a comprehensive win…and all the sides will be out this week again, at both senior and junior levels…so expected plenty of shouts of “howzat” if you are at the Club this weekend….
The Baseballers are also back into the swing, with schools going back, their practices and matches also commence this week, lots of home games this weekend…so both sides of the street are going to have busy weekends….
Our summer soccer leagues have also commenced, with the Ladies and Mens enjoying their matches on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Friday nights…if you do happen to ride past the North during the week and see the Soccer lights on, pop down to support these ever enthusiastic Club players…I have been to e few matches now…and the atmosphere is quite electric….
Our athletes are hard at work and preparations are on track for a fantastic Comrades entry…another half marathon was concluded last weekend…..there were lots of smiles after completion, so despite the warm weather, it seems that a good result was achieved…and again the mornings are still as busy as ever (without the CMS calls – thank you!!) and our time trails and club runs are also well attended…
With Football (or Soccer as I was rudely reminded this weekend) practices in full swing on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sunday mornings…our winter sports people are getting themselves geared up for another great season too….
Hockey 5’s also hit off on Sunday on the Astro and of course Tennis will continue too, so there is definitely going to be plenty of activity to satisfy all sports goers this weekend…
With the new year comes all sorts of ideas and arrangements…we have a few items and events in place already for the year…if you believe you have a good idea regarding a fund raiser or a possible classic or momentous event, please let me know, that the committee can discuss it…and decide on the merits of these….remember to send them through to rod.karoe@gmail.com
Have a spanking new year….cheers…Rod
