The Scimitar 28 Nov 2017
BNSC NEWSLETTER
Hi there to everyone
A week that was high(low)lighted for me with disappointment and joy….
I was hoping that the Drakensberg Boys Choir was going to be a massively successful show for both our Members and locals was unfortunately destroyed by inclement weather. The rain came down in buckets and around 16h00, but then the clouds lifted and the sun came out…and the show was postponed for an hour….the crowds started arriving while the boys were running off some of their energy on the fields…….but then the clouds began to ominously build up and it got darker and darker….and two minutes before the allotted time, the heavens opened again and this time for good..… I had my wife and mother-in-law here…and their disappointment was so real you could almost feel it…and I think they were representative of many people who had taken the time out between the two rain storms, to come and watch this world class and renowned group of young men. The promoters have promised to bring them back next year…so please keep your eyes and ears open as for the dates for their return to the North….
The joy of the week for me was the ToyRun…what a truly extraordinary event this is….and the day started off bright and clear after three days of pretty persistent rain, which augured well for a great day….. this was the 35th edition of this popular charity drive…and it did not disappoint…it is an electrifying sight and feeling to watch and experience the mass arrival of thousands of bikes from throughout Gauteng and surrounding provinces…it is awe inspiring for me…albeit that the perception of motor cyclists for me from a young age, was one of “bad boys”…..to watch some of these “massive brekers” on a variety of modes of motor cycles, proudly displaying a fluffy toy on their handlebars, pinion, some were stuck onto their helmets and some were even holding tight onto a massive teddy, is one of my gooseflesh moments of the year, it is a complete rush to hear the roar of these finely tuned machines and it really is an amazing sight to behold…..I saw that the tent where all the donations were gathered were busy early into the evening…sorting and allocating to the various different Lions regions for redistribution…then to some unsung heroes….to Peter Beart, organiser in Chief and the head Honcho of the ToyRun, congratulations to you and year team for another successful day…I know that there are many long hours spent in the preparation, set up and running of this event…on behalf of Benoni Northerns and the community on general, your efforts are truly appreciated…also, a huge thank you to all the people from the sub-sections for assisting by manning the bars for the day…it becomes really crazy between 10 and 2….and then of course to our President, Craig Wittstock, who pulls the whole event together from a Benoni Northerns perspective, with the minimum of fuss as if it is a walk in the park….thanks Craig, you are definitely a superstar…
Sport last week was a little washed out from a cricket point of view, with only two games completed….and both the Promotion and Directors sides being on the winning trail….I saw the scores from the Directors game…and these were a little close for comfort, winning by 10 runs after posting in the region of 140 odd…well done to both of these teams….this week there won’t be any home games as the East Rand show is on… and remember that access to the Club may be a little more difficult than normal…
Friday was another cracker of an evening…despite the poor weather, which resulted in the cancellation of the Movies in the Park…the Night Market also only lasted a couple of hours too before the rain sent everyone scurrying for cover….to the warmth and sanctity of the Clubhouse…only to find that there was a deluxe party going on inside…the Wilsons were playing in the ladies bar…we had a satellite beer bar in the Hall…and Steve Keen brought his team inside with the poor weather and we had another bar pop up in the Hall, this time being of a vodka and gin variety….our thanks to this team who donated their entire proceeds for the night to the Club…thank you Steve for the experience and of course the donation…these bars appeared to be quite a hit, so we will look at doing something of this nature more regularly…
I’ve left it for last….the person drawn at the Joker draw event last week was Trevor Francis…Trevor is the electrician for the Soccer section and I usually see him up a ladder or scrambling on his hands and knees looking for an electrical fault…so it was quite different seeing him in the bar, adrenalin pumping, trying his best to find the joker…the bad news for him, but the good news for everyone else, is that he uncovered the three of hearts…so the Joker remains hidden for at least another week….but the Jackpot took a major leap and now stands at R256 252!! That is really a heeeuuuge number…more than a quarter of a bar…up for grabs…and you could be the winner…all you need in to purchase as many R5 tickets as you wish, it could be just one and place them in the big black box in the Hall…and then wait for your name to be called out at 19H30 on Friday night…our Members draw was also not won, so this week that has moved up to R5800 and will be drawn at 19h00. Which is just a half an hour before the big Joker draw bonanza will take place…
This Friday we welcome back “Saving Silence” who proved to be a very popular duo the last time they played…another Friday…another promise of an epic evening at the North….
The East Rand show makes its debut this week at the North, being held from Thursday through to Saturday….it is the first of its kind to be held at our ground, so if you could come along and support, it would be most appreciated….dependent on the success of this event, this could become an annual occurrence…the organisers have displayed a lots of commitment and courage to tackle a show of this magnitude….so all the best to Jaco and Dale…I trust that your efforts will be well rewarded…
I hope to meet you all and chat with you soon….
Cheers Rod
