Bridge Results 23 Nov 2017
When I looked around the hall this afternoon and thought about the significance of Alan’s passing a year ago, I also thought about how fortunate we are, those of us gathered together in the pursuit of this game we play with such vigour. Amongst us this afternoon there were some younger people, but most of us have been around the block a few times.
And so I refer to the French essayist Joseph Joubert, who wrote the following some 200 years ago and I make no apology for sounding a little serious for a change.
‘The evening of life brings with it it’s lamps”
Joseph Joubert
I am personally very grateful for being able to exercise my mind at least twice a week, because it provides cerebral excitement of a kind that few ‘non bridge players’ could ever understand. And to those of you members who don’t yet relate to what I’m saying, just chill, you’ll understand in the fullness of time.
OK, now to the events of today, with two visitors, Clyde and Lotte winning with a percentage of 68.5%, followed by the two old Precision players, Ian and Roy, and Robert and Cathy third.
A special thank you to all who arranged today’s memorial to Alan. We’ll always remember his great contribution to our club. Rest in peace, old friend.
I want to finish today by quoting another beautiful thought from Joseph Joubert, which goes like this;
“To teach is to learn twice”
This is why those of that are able to, should share their knowledge with people who haven’t been fortunate enough to have gathered as much we have.
OK, I’ll get back to less serious stuff next week.
Love you guys,
Roy
