The Scimitar 19 Sep 2017
BNSC NEWSLETTER
Good day everybody
I’m not sure who is more confused by the weather at the moment… Mother Nature or myself…we seem to have a week of winter, a week of summer, a day of spring…some more winter…So when I arrive at work each day, it looks like I am going on holiday…I am dressed for the current conditions, but I have a suitcase with me, to cover all the seasons that may occur over the next 8 or so hours… Jokes aside…with the changes in the weather definitely means that we are moving towards summer, which is still my favourite time of the year…t-shirts, shorts and slip-slops….oooh, forgot the cap, I land up dreadfully sun burnt if I forget that…so roll on summer…
The Club was surprisingly busy considering everything else that was on over the weekend…our joker draw, the Athletics Golf day, soccer side away at the Cup-Final…and the three day wedding arrangement, that meant we had piles of people away for the day on Friday & Saturday…. (To Mark and Sheila, congratulations… May the future continue to be littered with wonderful memories and that your love grows for each other forever)
Friday saw a picture card being turned over (NOT THE JOKER THOUGH!!) and we now know where the Jack of Clubs was hiding…with no joker winner means that the draw jackpot has risen again….and this week stands at a whopping R156474…and with only 18 cards left, means that your chances of finding it have once again improved…the members draw has also risen and is now up to R3800….and with an old favourite band, Dream Catcher, on show in the Scimitar…means that we should have a crackerjack evening…come along and enjoy it with us…
And with summer comes Cricket…and on Saturday, the boys had their whites on and were playing…all friendlies, but everyone was trying to get rid of the winter rustiness and getting ready for an action filled season.
Our soccer boys came back from the cup final unfortunately without the trophy…we are still extremely proud of the team, you did us proud…that you happened to meet up with the very talented Randburg outfit on their really good day, whilst having to deal with a makeshift replacement goalkeeper and some other incidents, means that it was not meant to be this year. To Jannie and all his exciting team of players…you have set a solid base to leap from next year…we have an extremely young squad that grows in experience and temperament each week…very soon, you will be riding the crest of the wave that you deserve….enjoy your rest and time off…see you in the new year.
Easterns Ladies Hockey held their prize giving on Saturday….preceded by a “mash-up” on the Astro…where ladies from all the leagues and teams were mixed up together into form different sides …and from the sidelines, it looked like it was great fun, there were smiles aplenty…I’m sure that this successful concept will be repeated again in the future….Well done to the Northerns side the Yaya’s, who were pool A league runners up…excellent stuff…next year let’s go and win the trophy…. and also to Mike Williams from Northerns, who was voted as the best Umpire of the year….that’s super Mike….
The Men’s hockey league also came to an end this past weekend…with a thrilling final match…the Northerns Hangovers losing to the Chirpers 4-3 with what was the last stroke of the match. Overall, a really great season…thank you to everyone who participated….the success of the current league augers well for the future of senior hockey in the region…. there will still be the “Crutch” tournament to be held on October 1…this is always a great day for everyone…remember to put it on your calendar…
Our runners are starting to get busy…I see that there are plenty of people out on the Club run on Wednesdays…and as I stay pretty close to the Club, I hear the boys and girls out by 5 most mornings, so they are already beginning their preparation for their particular goals for the year…. The athletes also held a very successful Golf Day at the Benoni Country Club last Friday…congratulations to all the winners and players…whilst a thank you and well done to all the organisers….we missed you at the North for the draws on Friday…hurry back this week….
Thanks to everyone who took time out of their busy schedules to come and watch the Two Old Farts…I enjoyed the evening thoroughly…but in particular I thought that Mel Miller has not lost any of his knack to make people laugh uncontrollably…we will definitely have similar comedy evenings in the future….
The renovations should be a thing of the past by the end of the month….I think they have turned out really well….I am soooo happy with the final results…there will still be some little subtle changes happening as we go along…which will all add value to the Club and the Members…I obviously have my own ideas about what we should do…if you have any suggestions that you think would be of benefit to the club, please don’t forget to email me on rod.karoe@gmail.com
Have a great week…if you are travelling for the long weekend….drive safely and have a great time…for those who are staying at home…the North will be open from 10h00 every day of the weekend for your convenience, see you soon!!
Take care
