The Scimitar 22 Aug 2017
BNSC NEWSLETTER
Hi there all……
I think that myself and the staff were quite happy to have a little breathing space in the last week….After the hustle and bustle of the Hockey Masters, it felt decidedly quiet here over the last week…With the soccer players having a bye and the cold weather forcing many people to rather stay indoors…the crowds of the previous week, dwindled to a trickle…but surprisingly, our Members came up with innovative ideas and were able to make use of the time to have braai’s and initiations…get-togethers and fancy dress…the beer garden played host to some interesting sights as the cold weather still played it’s part…and kept some people indoors….Those who did venture up to the North, we able to watch some old favourites, Billy and Martin playing on Friday night and danced and sang the night away with Coyote…
Another week of draws and we still have not been able to find a winner for the Joker draw….but it looks like the Athletic team of Cordier and Smith is the group to join….over the last five draws, one of the their number has been drawn three times…so Chantal, I think you can start charging royalties on the number of people asking you now complete their tickets….so with no winner as yet, our Joker draw crawls over the R134 thousand level for this week. Our Members draw also moves up and is now at R3 000…remember the Members draw and the Friday night raffles are held at 19h00 whilst the last joker draw tickets are sold by 19h20, with the draw being held at 19h30. Tickets are just R5…the more tickets you buy, the greater your chances are of being drawn…and all remember to ask Chantal Cordier to fill in your lucky tickets…. Tee-hee!!
Also, this week is the last Friday of the month, so there will be a night market held. A variety of food stall and crafters will have their wares on display. We are also trying a new idea….”Movies in the Park” makes its debut this Friday evening….(we are wanting to create a family picnic atmosphere, whilst watching movies)…as a starter this month, we will be showing kids movies and shows, to see the best positioning for the screen and speakers…there will not be any charge this month…so bring the kids along, with their blankets and pillows and try something new….as summer rolls in, I’m sure this will be a great attraction… The Zimmer Twinz are also playing in the Scimitar…so we are trying to satisfy everyone’s needs…from young to old, movies and music, raffles and draws, gourmet food and delicacies, hopefully you will find something at the North this week to tickle your fancy…
Our men’s hockey players are back in the swing of their second round of fixtures, while the girls are coming to the end of their season…but rest assured the girls will still be supporting all the matches being played…
The second soccer side have a bye this weekend, while the first team are off to Balfour Park to play Highlands Park…in what should be a cracking match. Good luck to Jannie and his charges…please bring back all three points.
The Benoni Country Club (BCC) had their AGM last week…where a special vote of thanks was extended to Benoni Northerns and its Members for all their support in their battle with the Council regarding the long term future of their facility. The BCC are currently in the final throes of negotiation and preparation of their lease, which should be completed by the end of September. This rental agreement now places a line in the sand and augers well for other Sports Clubs in Benoni with particular regard to their and particularly our, long term future in the City and Metro. We are currently busy with preparations for our submissions to the Council regarding our lease, with all the sub-sections sending the relevant information through to the Main Club that we may collate and ready this for final presentation. Please hold thumbs that we land up with a favourable outcome….but this will obviously affect our costs and we will need to recover these from new fundraisers and events, either additional subscriptions or refreshment pricing…at the end of the day, we as Members will land up contributing in one way or another toward the funding of these costs.
Our renovations and additions are really starting to take shape, even the change rooms have proceeded along nicely, well ahead of schedule….and everyone present is really starting to see the benefits…I, for one, can’t wait to see what has been completed daily…I see that today the paving has started in the passage…that is going to be stunning and will give the continuity from one are to another…and we are going to have everything inside on one level….the potential problem of scuff marks down the passage has already been addressed and this will hopefully not affect us in the future.…and now I am awaiting the new front door and the entrance will almost be complete….also with the new glass door as access to the patio, the chilly wind of last week was not as issue, as it couldn’t channel its way down the passage……a welcome improvement…. I’m sure everyone is fervently waiting for the day that we can say that phase one is complete….and the next question to be raised…when are we starting with phase two?
I was told that someone has cut the fence at the Astro and we have had some bricks being removed that are alongside the fence…could I please ask all members that if the see anything that is suspicious around the Club, or that they think could cause potential problems, please phone one of the sub-section Chairman or the Office to report this. If you believe that an e-mail would suffice, please send these through to rod.karoe@gmail.com. You may also use this e-mail address for any suggestions, compliments or complaints too….
That’s everything for this week…take care and keep warm
Cheers Rod
