The Scimitar 15 Aug 2017
BNSC NEWSLETTER
Hi there all……
Apart from the hive of activity of the Masters…Women’s day marked a special day in the history of our Club. The hockey field in front of the Club House was renamed as “Ted Jarvis Field”! This is in honor of our Past Chairman and President, who has been associated with the Club for over 40 years. Ted joined in 1976 and has played Hockey and Cricket for the Club, but it was in the capacity of Chairman and President that his impact was felt. He has really been through the thick and thin within the Club…and it is with his guidance and understanding that the Club is in the magnificent position it is at present. With most other Clubs downsizing and reducing numbers, the North is experiencing unprecedented growth, ensuring the success it currently enjoys and the longevity which will inevitably follow. The sign for the Ted Jarvis field, is clearly seen from the Club House and surrounds and truly honours this great Man….Thank you Ted for all time and energy you have spent on and at the North! In this truly unique gesture, the Club has ensured that this marvellous individual will be remembered for many generations to come…
But I think I need a week off, it feels that I had two weeks squeezed into 4 days!!…and I know all the participants of the Masters feel the same…the North was sizzling from Women’s day to Saturday, it was a battle to keep pace with all the happenings….with over a thousand players descending onto the fields at Northerns and St Dunstans (with St Doms Astro also playing host to 8 games a day) there was a constant movement of players, umpires, officials…and of course all the refreshments…there were the inevitable cooler boxes of all shapes and sizes, carrying the drinks of choice for each particular side…with all the PJ’s being called on to refill these constantly…
Our bar staff were under constant pressure, but as always they came up trumps….my grateful thanks to Shepherd and all his fantastic staff…you all did an absolutely sterling job, serving, cleaning, filling bars, washing, giving directions and just generally keeping the busy crowds happy…and with all that, you all were still smiling….
Also my thanks also to the Tennis Club, who had hordes of people descending on their Clubhouse for AGM’s…thank you for accommodating these meetings…
And to Marge and her willing helpers too, my gratitude for all your efforts…despite some really difficult constraints placed on you, your food (with quality, service and may I say prices too) remained excellent…Thank you…
I am an extremely proud Benoni Northerns Manager and Member….I received compliments from all quarters, regarding our playing surfaces and grounds, our buildings and facilities, our friendly Staff and Members…. we received a huge applause as thanks at the Eastern Gauteng Masters Hockey AGM…in fact I received no complaints that were directed toward us as a Club at all….. the only rumblings that were received related to the music that some residents felt went on too late in the evening…and to the manner in which someone relieved himself in the street instead of using one of the many toilet facilities that were available…(#sheepish smile and chuckle#)
All the hockey on show, was played in true Masters spirit…and if the last match of the weekend between Eastern Gauteng and Western Province was consistent with the rest of the weekends fare, then it was brilliant… I watched that particular match absolutely enthralled, at the pace, abilities and stick-work capabilities of the players… well done to Easterns on getting their nose over the line in that match….I got tired just watching….also in that match there were a fair number of Benoni Northerns players participating…and that just got my heart pumping all over again with pride!
The parties in the evening were epic affairs…despite the handful of complaints received (letters were circulated to all the residents in the area) there were also positive comments received…so all in all a great weekend of sport. Thank you to Eastern Gauteng for all their organisation and allowing us to be part of this phenomenal event….it will take a monumental effort by any of the future hosts to equal, let alone better this year’s show! The Tournament moves to Durban next year…good luck to everyone concerned.
For all those interested in the Friday draws of last week…neither were won…so this week the joker jackpot stands at over R130 thousand rand…come and join us on Friday as we also see the return of some old favourites…with Billy and Martin joining together as Coyote, to entertain us in the Scimitar…
And now for some of our local Northerns sporting news…although the car parks were packed with people over the weekend, I saw that the athletes were still able to complete their weekly runs on Wednesday and Saturday…I hope they all went well…I did see quite a few of the runners present at some of the Masters parties…and judging from their smiles and dancing antics…they may just not have been part of that running bus mentioned on Saturday morning!!
The Soccer boys took on the challenge of playing across the road for a change by the scruff of the neck…and beat Kempton Park in the Cup matches played on Saturday… well done to both the 1st and 2nd sides on their wins… That is brilliant…both of these sides have a bye this weekend…enjoy the rest boys as we edge toward the end of the season.
Hockey returns in full force again this weekend…the tired bodies have had a week to recover, so hopefully all teams with be at full strength. Good luck to all players, coaches, umpires and spectators.
That is all for this episode….hope you all have a fantastic week…take care
