The Scimitar 6 Jun 2017
BNSC NEWSLETTER
Hi there to everybody
Wowie…things are definitely happening at the North…..another stunning Friday night, followed by the Craft Beer Festival and another rugby match at home…followed by some vociferous support in the European Cup Final, whilst on Sunday we were all glued to the television sets at the North to witness the progress of our brave Comrades tackling the massive task of running from Durban to Johannesburg…whilst we had all the hockey and junior footballers had displayed their skills on the fields.
Rugby had another unfortunate result… the coach has expressed his disappointment at the fitness of the boys…so this week there may be a few sore bodies amongst our rugby players…I think some tough practice awaits…vasbyt boys…
We had another super Friday evening, with our live music proving to be a popular attraction amongst the locals…but we definitely missed the presence of our running fraternity, who were all off to Durban…. with another roll over of both of our draws means that the members draw this week escalates to R7 200, whilst the Joker moves up to almost R90 000….. so on Friday, remember to come to the Members draw at 19h00…and after that, take as many R5 tickets as you wish, to better your chances of getting selected to attempt to show us where the joker is….we have just completed week 20, so the odds improve weekly to find where the joker is hiding…. Freedom Unfound are our band playing in the Scimitar… they have proved to be very popular before….I am sure they will produce another cracker to set our weekend off.
Saturday saw The Green Craft Beer Festival hosted on our main Hockey field…and a crowd of over 1 300 arrived to enjoy the afternoon of beer, food, music and games. We had our fair share of visitors at the North, coming to check on the progress of our National Cricket team or just to pop in and enjoy a traditional beer or two. The music was really top notch and I am sure that everyone present, enjoyed the variety of foods on offer, a game of beer pong, or just enjoying laying around on the various loungers that were available, listening to the music and enjoying the atmosphere.
And onto Sunday….not any Sunday….Comrades Sunday!! I stand in absolute awe of these brave runners who take on the might of the road from Durban to Pietermaritzburg…. I watched…mesmerised…the leaders…the winners…those who made running look easy…and then the people, like you and I…the men and women who are our family, friends, colleagues, Club Members…. I salute you…I saw many smiles…some tears….and I am sure plenty experienced some heartbreak…but for all those who competed…congratulations…you are all superstars in your own right…and to our warriors from the North…I was incredibly proud to be able to spot the yellow and white vests on many occasions…thank you for your efforts in maintaining the Clubs name high… I am sure that there are a lot of sore bodies out there….today they may say “never again!”….but I have heard that many times….and within three months, the mind and body are strong and determined enough again to say “Yes…I will do it again next year!”….I may never have had sufficient talent or determination to compete or complete one of these epic races, but I do respect every single attribute that each of you display in your perseverance in completing the Comrades…there are a vast number of kilometres travelled or run and many sacrifices that you make in order to achieve this goal… Congratulations on a marvellous achievement!!
This week, we have the return of soccer to the North…our boys had a week off last week…but I saw that they didn’t have any time off…they were all hard at work…even on Sunday morning, with a practice…it is Cup time, so win this one that we can advance to the next round…with the hockey boys and girls also keeping the Astro schedules busy…
I was able to watch some of our Junior footballers last week….I saw lots of grit, skill and ability, with some budding Ronaldo’s, Messi’s and Bale’s around…well done to the boys, I saw you sticking to the task and hand and many positive results were achieved…..if the final outcome of the matches were based purely on the excitement generated on the side from the parents, grand-parents and friends, I do not think our boys would lose any matches….ever!
A great heart warming story for you….there was a house fire at a complex opposite St Dunstans last week which eventually completely destroyed the home…one of our Soccer members, Michael Juanas-Uriol, with no consideration for his own safety, ventured into the house to save the young children inside, on not just one, but two occasions. After that, he popped off to Soccer practice as if nothing had happened… modest young man…My heart swells with pride when I hear stories like this and it fills me with positivity, knowing that the future is bright if these are the leaders of the future. Well done Michael, Benoni Northerns is proud to say that you are a member of our Club and this is the quality of members in our ranks. Congratulations too, to your Dad and Mom, who have done a fine job in raising you with such high standards of service, honour and discipline.
Just a quick reminder, our new Castle Lite draught tap should be operational in the Scimitar by Friday…Yay!! At last!
That’s it….please keep sending any complaints, compliments or suggestions to me at rod.karoe@gmail.com
Cheers, take care Rod
