The Scimitar 2 May 2017
BNSC NEWSLETTER
Hello to everyone from this of my desk
We have just ended a luxurious, long and languid weekend…Tuesday, and it is back to the routine, but we can still reflect on the last few days and for most it was time to kick off the shoes and relax….and it was mostly like that at the North….although our soccer boys were busy with two matches and the runners had themselves a long training run, a month before their big race…all our other winter sports were in hibernation. Hockey are awaiting their big wakeup call over the coming weekend…Baseball are also gearing up to begin their leagues too…whilst our newest kids on the block…are about to bring rugby to the North!!
Rugby kick off their season this weekend…so we will see lots of energy and numbers of teams and players across the road…their juniors are also starting soon…. our Saturday mornings at the North will be a really busy affair in the future…all the best to the Grizzlies (the rugby juniors), who are starting under the Northerns banner too….The seniors will be practicing on the hockey field next to the Astro under the lights during the week….and their first matches are scheduled to begin from this weekend.
Hockey too, are kicking off this weekend, with the Ladies leagues on Saturday afternoon, with all matches split between St Dunstans Astro and the one on our top field. All the local mens leagues begin on Sunday morning, so expect to see a great turnout of senior players over the coming weekends…the juniors will also be busy training on Saturday mornings, perfecting their skills, as their schedule of tournaments gets underway soon too….
The soccer boys definitely produced the goods over last weekend, with a seriously solid win over Zwide on Thursday, whilst on Saturday they overcame a gutsy Olympia. Great stuff boys, we are all really happy to see that you have turned around the few poor results…I am sure we all feel that you will continue to perform and make us proud….another good weekend was enjoyed by the reserves, who bagged another couple of wins, to match the firsts. Our soccer Juniors are also busy this weekend, after all the holidays, all the kids are raring to go…all the best to them too…
The baseball boys are still quietly getting on with their practices and will start their leagues soon…. All the best to these Northerns warriors…we’re all wishing you plenty of home runs and success….
The club car park was filled to capacity from early on Monday morning…all the runners having a pre dawn start to a practice run for the Comrades….this 60km run is part of their build up to their big day… but despite the length of the run, I saw a lot of smiling and happy faces at the lunch….there were however a few people walking around a little gingerly, but I imagine that is to be expected after such a lengthy workout. Congrats to all those who completed…I hope you all achieved the goals you set for yourselves. In a little over a month, you will be lining up at the start of the race… We wish you well…
Even our summer sports are getting in on the action and the juniors are competing in a Winter league and practicing in the evenings in anticipation of a great and fulfilling season, with three fields being used on Sunday, I think we are going to have a bumper bust season. A big thank you to the cricket section for making this into an all year round sport… The cricket committee are also still busy with the upgrade of their A pitch…every day we see the industrious workers busy adding more grass to the bare areas…I’m sure all the effort will be worthwhile and we will have an fantastic pitch in the coming seasons. I heard that our Legends team went on tour to Zimbabwe over the long weekend, but I was told what goes on tour, stays on tour….I’m not sure if that means the results were bad….or the boys got up to major mischief…but I will leave that to them to explain.
Last Friday saw the return of the night market…and it was really festive occasion…I took a quick look from the deck and was amazed at how warm and inviting the market looked…the lights made the scene appear surreal and the smells coming from the food stalls was tantalising…from the feedback of the stall holders, they are enjoying our location and the setting… the dates have been set for the next one already…diarise it, on May 26th we will host the next one….
The Joker and Members draws were not won, so there is a carry over….the Joker draw now stands at R78 717 this week, whilst the Members draw is at another record high of R6 200…. come and meet us on Friday for these two draws…and our Friday live music this week is Dream Catcher….a brilliant bass player accompanied by a most talented vocalist and guitarist….they have proved to be a very popular attraction….lots of dancing and singing will be the order of the night…
That’s about all the news I have for this week, please remember if you have any problems or praise about the Club, please let me know on my personal email rod.karoe@gmail.com
