Hi there all
Onto edition number two and the North was buzzing again this weekend…as the winter approaches, we have the athletes gearing up for their big challenges of Two Oceans and Comrades, whilst our soccer, hockey and baseball members are all getting themselves going and fit for the oncoming season. With Cricket winding down for their rest period, the first side was battling it out in their finals on Sunday, while their junior members were being honoured at their annual prize-giving. We have masses of talent at the Club and need to maintain and nurture these young sports fellows, as the success of our Club in time to come will depend on the skills and loyalty of our youth.
Sunday saw the return of our first hockey side to the Northern’s grounds, in an epic battle for East Rand supremacy with CBCOB, honors ending even at 2 all at the conclusion. It was truly wonderful to see the Northerns first team at home for the first time in many years….And as the summer months draw to a close, our soccer boys will also be returning to the North this weekend, after being successful in their first two league encounters of the new campaign.
We recently hosted a fantastic St Patrick’s celebration and party which was enjoyed by all whom attended, we will most definitely continue with this type of themed evenings…keep reading “the Scimitar” for further details.
Members are reminded of the Joker draw we have every Friday night at the club at 19h30 and the prize money is now fast approaching the R70 000 level. Come along and try your luck at the jackpot, tickets are only R5 each…buy as many as you wish to increase your chances….we also have a live band every Friday night in the Scimitar and weather permitting, the band plays outside and the mood is most festive, sing-a-long or even dance the night away with us.
This Friday evening the 31st (and every last Friday of the month) we host the night market, which is held just outside the beer garden at the top of the main Hockey field. There will be a variety of food and craft stalls available, bring along the family to enjoy the tasty treats and browse through the various stalls and their wares. As I have previously mentioned, we have live music, a vibrant young band with thename of Boycott Ballad starting at 17h00…so pop in on Friday, grab a bite to eat from the variety of food stalls available and come and experience this vibrant open air event…
Last week Benoni Northern’s football grounds hosted the Annual Rynfield Drapers Cup…. what a great sight to see all the local schools vying to win their particular age category. There were a myriad of the different colours displayed, representing the schools on show and with all the vocal support of pupils and parents the atmosphere was quite electric. The success of this competition augers well for the future of soccer in Benoni. Well done to all the organisers, administrators and players….
There is an 8-a-side hockey tournament up on the Astro all day Saturday, whilst on Sunday, Wanderers from Australia are playing against some of our local sides. It should be most festive, with some great talent on show, please support our players and thereafter, join us in the beer garden, for the inevitable post-mortems.

Baseball hosted their Junior section’s prize-giving and the clubhouse was abuzz with all our achievers at the baseball Club… brilliant to see so many parents and grandparents present too….Congratulations to all the players on their achievements and a special thank you to the coaches, without whom none of these festivities would have been possible.
I have experienced an amazing opening 6 months at the club, I thank you all for the support that I have received, it has been most heart warming and encouraging. The executive committee is constantly looking at ways of improving the club for all of our collective benefit and we are still in for some exciting upgrades and changes that will transform the club even further….I am really looking forward to the exciting times that await us…..

Kerri Wilson Award – U12A squad 4th March
On Saturday morning 4th March 2017, we played Springs Old Boys as U12A. We had had to call up 6 boys from the U12B team to assist us with our game on Saturday. (the list of the boys is below).
As our game ended on Saturday, our boys went to line up to shake hands with the opposing team, their coach came over to Leon and the boys, congratulated us on the win, and asked if we would mind very much if he put his 12th man on for a bat. This is a new boy on their team, and he is hard of hearing. Our boys did not hesitate, and invited the boy onto the field. Leon then informed me that they would be letting the boy have a bat, and we should keep his run tally, but not actually score.
On his first ball, he was bowled out. To which our boys responded, “Coach, please call it a no ball” and proceeded to put the bails back on the stumps, and give the boy another go. In the meantime, a group of boys had surrounded him, and were “coaching him”. Explaining where his bat should go, how he should stand, and where the ball would pitch. And our bowler proceeded to pitch it exactly where he was supposed to. Allowing the boy to make some runs, and our boys were loving every minute of this impromtu “extra” The last ball hit him on his hand, and almost instantly he had a group of our boys surrounding him, making sure he was OK, and then among themselves, decided that they didn’t want to hurt him again, and they decided it was enough.
I can’t tell you how proud I am of the boys mentioned below. They showed true passion, compassion, and caring for their fellow player, even if he was from another team.

All Ladies that would like a chance to represent EGHA at the 2017 SACDs tournament to come down and be part of the training squad of which the final team will be selected. Cost R30 per player
