MESSAGE FROM THE CLUB MANAGER
A first from me…. a weekly update from my perspective… a short precise of what is happening at “The North” …..
As this is the first of my messages, perhaps an overview of myself, the Club and what it means to me, would be in order.
I started playing cricket at the Club in 1976 and by 1980 had, together with a bunch of cricketers, started a social soccer side, called the “Forfs” and also decided to pick up a hockey stick for the first time, playing for one of our social sides. Until I was transferred to Durban in 1989, I continued playing all three sports and after leaving, was most disappointed never to find another Club that was able to match the camaraderie and passion of “The North”. I continued my association at the Club, whenever I returned, whether it was for a drink or for the odd game that I was able to help out with. When I returned to Benoni, I rekindled my love of the North and started playing Hockey again.
So when I was appointed as Manager towards the end of last year, I was excited at the prospect of continuing my ongoing relationship with the Club, but now in a different guise. Hopefully I will have a positive influence in the running and efficient operation of the Club. If you have any suggestions or complaints, please do not hesitate to send it through to my personal email of rod.karoe@gmail.com
Benoni is a particularly active sporting town and Benoni Northerns boasts almost two and a half thousand active junior and senior members split amongst all of the sporting codes that we offer and we are most proud of the achievements of these teams and individuals. I am always so chuffed to see the Northerns colours flying high, whether it be on television in a prestigious race, on the road, at a neighbouring town sports ground or at our glorious home sanctuary at the North.
Benoni Northerns is the premier venue for sporting events, from under 5‘s up to Provincial level on the East Rand and we currently endeavouring to improve the standards of all these fields. In this respect, we are upgrading our borehole facilities on the Southern side of the grounds to ensure that the playing surfaces of our main cricket oval and soccer fields and the grass hockey field are of the highest quality possible.
I am sure that all our members have been able to see the vast improvement in these fields over the last three months, mainly due to the efforts of Brian Buys, our new field consultant at the North. I would like to welcome Brian on board and thank him for the valuable input on the fields and the knowledge that he has already imparted to all of our employees and members, long may the association continue. We are currently mapping out our long term strategy regarding all our the fields at Benoni Northerns, which will mean that Baseball should also have improved playing surfaces in the not too distant future
To those frequenting our social bar facilities in the near future, you will find that we are implementing a new Point-of-Sale system, which will facilitate a more efficient service factor and has some added benefits that we will be able to include in the future. As there obviously may be some “teething problems”, if I could ask for your patience and understanding, these problems should be very short lived.
That is it for this week…..hopefully I will get to meet you all soon
Yours in Sport – Rod Scheepers
